I live in a tiny town in a part of Michigan you've never heard of with my wife and kids. I am also a devout Catholic who opposes the cult of Trump with every fiber of my being. Back in the dim ages, I got a couple of Ivy League diplomas to hang on my wall.

I've been reading how faith in our legal system has fallen in recent years. Having practiced law for over a dozen years now, I believe Americans are correct to lose faith. Fairness and justice have become rare exceptions to the rule. No part of our nation is more thoroughly biased toward the rich.

Currently reading: "The Middle Kingdoms" by Martyn Rady. It's a well-written history of Central Europe all the way from Roman times to the post-Soviet era. I've learned a great deal from this book, and I recommend it.

Sorry for being absent the last week or two. The holidays were busy. Also, since I work at home, I take care of my kids when they're not at school, and this is the first time they're both at school for a full day in 34 days. (Christmas vacation, plus several snow days, plus 3 rounds of pneumonia).

I actually used to think Elon Musk was a pretty benign guy. Remember when he was a guest star on the Big Bang Theory? He was giving out meals at a soup kitchen during the episode, if my memory serves. Boy, was I wrong about him. "Benign" is not how I would describe him today.

Among the many diseases that RFK wants to resurrect is pertussis, or the whooping cough. Its funny name belies its seriousness. I got it at age 12. Worst illness of my entire childhood. I missed 2 weeks of school and frequently puked just from coughing so hard. We can't let our children suffer that.

Never forget that, in addition to the world's many other problems right now, China is committing ongoing genocide against the Uyghurs. Over a million Uyghurs are in concentration camps for re-education and/or sterilization, and those who escape China are hunted down by Chinese agents worldwide.

Perhaps even more than corruption, the problem with the legal system is slowness. Cases against Trump filed in 2017 weren't resolved until Biden's term. Cases filed in 2022 couldn't finish before the 2024 election. If urgent litigation takes years, even a well-meaning judge cannot help much.

I fell in love with frogs at 11 years old. I taught classes about them at Boy Scout camp for years and have had many as pets. So how on earth did I never know that some frogs have no tadpole stage? The cliff chirping frog, for example, lays eggs that hatch directly into froglets. My mind is blown.

Americans would like to think that our country is a meritocracy. But for our current system to be based on merit, we would have to believe that guys like Musk and Bezos, with literally one million times as much wealth as working class people, are one million times as worthy. That is absurd.
