Welcome to the Great Emboldening, where ideas and actions that might have been unthinkable, objectionable, or reputationally risky in the past are now on the table, @cwarzel.bsky.social writes. theatln.tc/Gw6V9I90

It took seeing adult bullies to understand that my childhood bullies didn’t even really want to hurt me, they just wanted to feel powerful and how I felt about it wasn’t even in the equation. I can’t imagine someone not outgrowing that, but apparently it happens quite a lot!

Ne vous méprenez pas : L'Ukraine mène le combat pour la démocratie. Une paix juste et durable requière que l'Ukraine soit à la table des négociations, et sa victoire renforcera la sécurité de nous tous. L'Ukraine doit gagner. Poutine doit perdre. Slava Ukraini.

To take your mind off all this, here’s our new office kitten Montagu amusing himself by ringing a tiny red bell with his head (Volume up)

I logged onto LinkedIn today expecting to see my feed filled with outrage from the lawyer connections I have – most of whom are former federal government attorneys who now work outside the federal government in private practice or in the private sector. Per a Tuesday Executive Order, /1

Sometimes sporting events really are bigger than the game itself, writes six-time Stanley Cup champion Ken Dryden. Why Canada needed the 4 Nations Cup win:

TRUMP: *fires black chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; fires female chief of naval operations; hires unqualified replacement, a white man* NYT:

VERY encouraging to hear Germany’s new chancellor treating the Musk/Trump foreign-interference threat as seriously as Moscow’s

Gift link. A small unelected, secretive crew now has free access to sensitive private data of everyone. And Musk is already publicly targeting family members of judges who rule against the administration. If this isn’t ringing alarm bells, I don’t know what would. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/21/o...

This is the template, Democrats.

President Trump said he will continue to restrict The Associated Press’ access to his events and news conferences until the outlet goes along with his renaming of the Gulf of Mexico in its reports. He acknowledged that the move was a presidential retaliation against AP's editorial policy.

The "large scale social deception" contract Musk is conspiracizing about was: * first awarded under Trump * paid to Reuters' data division, not the newsroom * for researching *defenses* against deception * not revealed by "DOGE investigations" and was a public record, visible online for many years

Portuguese editorial cartoonist Zez Vaz reaches back to Tiananmen Square to call on American defiance.

🧵"So this is how liberty dies..." Trump’s first 3 weeks have been a relentless flood of actions. It's incredibly hard to keep up. I’ve gone through 69 actions & mapped out the pattern - showing how they fall within 5 broad domains consistent with authoritarian states 1/9

Thank you @dougsaunders.bsky.social What a powerful and sobering article. Here’s a refreshed gift link if needed www.theglobeandmail.com/gift/16a79fe...

It’s already a constitutional crisis www.nytimes.com/2025/02/10/u...

Just to say the quiet part out loud, the point of having unelected judges in a democracy is so that *whether* acts of state are “legitimate” can be decided by someone other than the people who are undertaking them. Vermeule knows this, of course. So does Vance.

The new ruling ideology: governmental “nihilism—a desire to see existing institutions destroyed, with no particular plan or interest to replace and improve them.” www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

reupping this, for no particular reason

Ahead of Kendrick’s performance today, here’s a look back at the greatest halftime show ever, including the political, cultural & social messages Prince sent through his choice of songs and the story he was telling about Black music, ownership and creative control. www.anildash.com//2021/02/05/...

“I’m asking the British government today to protect the copyright of writers and artists in this country, and to understand that what we do is not just data. It’s not just content, and it’s certainly not there for big tech to read because they can.” www.thebookseller.com/news/jeanett...

Received a letter from POTUS today purporting to remove me as Commissioner and Chair of the FEC. There's a legal way to replace FEC commissioners-this isn't it. I've been so fortunate to serve the American people and stir up some good trouble along the way. That's not changing anytime soon.

This is cool ✊🏽 ⛓️‍💥

There has never been a larger gap in my (admittedly quite short) professional life between how lay folks and law profs are talking about what is happening in government right now. So much of what Trump is doing is just blatantly illegal — often in several ways at once.

Stepping into the leadership vacuum

It would be fantastic if major federal institutions would acknowledge that the executive branch cannot legally unilaterally cancel or redistribute congressionally appropriated funding on ideological grounds and thus they have no legal obligation to comply with such directives

“I felt that my byline was being used to create a storyline that was no longer mine.” Really dumb of @nytimes.com to alienate a voice like Krugman and really does not reflect well on management contrarian.substack.com/p/departing-...

Canadians are so influenced by the story America tells about itself that we don't know our own history, which is linked from the beginning with their history. We are on the margins of an empire, so this is normal. 1/x
