Take your pick! He is a whiny jackass almost the entire movie (and I love him for it). I think my personal favorite is "we should put her in charge!"

Definitely top 3, but Bill Paxton in Aliens has to be in the conversation

How about we judge him by his actions - fathering IVF children who hate him, lying continually about his tech companies' capabilities, and going on a months-long bender while destroying essential governmental functions

Good video essay and discussion. Question though: where does Phyllis Schlafly fit into this story? Palin is certainly the patient zero of what you describe, but it seems like Schlafly and perhaps others are precursors to this branch of the anti-feminist movement.

One of Miyazaki's singular qualities is that he is able to find and portray beauty and dignity in nature and in craft, in youth and in age, and in growth and in decay.

It certainly has potential! The chuds who by Regnery Press books ain't buying it, and the right-wing billionaires and organizations who prop up hacky book sales aren't touching it either. Here's hoping.

I have my share of irrational, inconsistent beliefs (we all do) but it seems that there is an army of investors armed with captial that can believe as many as six impossible things before breakfast.

I think this is Trump's one true innovation and superpower that sets him apart from Nixon, Reagan, Bush, etc. - an absolute disregard for appearances and his corrosive influence on the idea of trust, cf bsky.app/profile/goli...

I work in the financial industry and the standard that we are regularly trained to and and held to is avoiding even the *appearance* of impropriety. That POTUS and SCOTUS make a mockery of that standard doesn't make it incorrect.

When I speak of Andor's "experience," what I am referring to is fear, adrenaline, and crisis management, and not skill in fighting. Andor clearly has an edge in this regard.
Again, good thread, and thanks for the great discussion!

I agree with everything you're saying about MA training, having done some myself. But I would add something: I don't doubt that Andor has done some training, and he's been in his share of scrapes. But IMO, Andor is a pilot and a thief with weapons training, not a martial arts expert.

I think the two were a lot more closely matched, and Andor's experience in real life-or-death situations vs Syril's rage and relative inexperience were the difference makers, rather than fitness level or training. I'll have to watch it again though.

Nice thread, and overall I agree with the gist -- the fight was messy, chaotic, narratively exciting, visceral, and fitting with the characters. But I think you are forgetting that Syril was a cop. He probably spent time training, and stayed in shape too.
