like especially long category stuff from a decade ago, please download as much as you can. Who knows what's gonna get lost.

But also I guess the interest just isn't there for that type of thing. Could be fun, but also just simply too much work to manage.

I just think there could be a big benefit to having one place for zelda speedruns, like how it used to be and was originally designed to do. SRC is fine, and the ZSR discords do a lot, but it's still mostly game by game when it comes to planning events and stuff. Could definitely be more organized.

This is actually something I've thought about a lot. I know the ZSR site itself is kinda redundant at this point, but if ever it got reformatted, seeing monthly challenge runs, races, and stuff like that would be a lot of fun.

Events/seasonal leaderboards have always felt like a cool idea to me. I think even great runs can feel a little stale during long stretches with no new developments. So something fresh to bring a community together and have everyone focus on can help reignite some interest

I'm happy it's as popular as it is, and people are really enjoying it. I guess I'm just the outlier watching people "jump ship" to the rando boat and not having any interest in doing so myself. But that's the way the cookie crumbles.

And also it's just frustrating for me as someone who really doesn't find much enjoyment from rando, not that there is any problem with it. I guess I'm a speedrun purist in a way, and to me rando is speedrun adjacent, but really has little to do with speedrunning other than from an arbitrary pov.

I think you hit the nail on the head honestly. Also me saying I don't know what the solution is was purely rhetorical. I don't really think there's a problem per say, just bums be that a top 2 speedrun franchise 10 years ago only barely breaks top 10 today, despite the amount of games available.

exacerbated* though I am exasperated at the interest in zelda speedruns 😜

LOL yeah no I definitely don't want something like that happening again. Just bringing it up because it did create a huge uptick in interest, but now that things are leveling out and the world is pretty much back to normal, the drop off to pre covid levels is probably exasperated to a higher degree

It's just an observation I've had. An unfortunate one, but idk what the fix would be.

I guess it's simply a turn of the tides. Rando is just an easier pipeline for the things that people want to see. But that doesn't fully explain the other Zelda games still falling off in similar ways. Idk, maybe there will be a resurgence of interest in the future. Covid definitely made a boom.

😆 gotcha, gotcha

Idk, it's sad to see a passion you've followed for over a decade just drop off in competition and participation, for no reason other than "it's easier to watch than to do yourself", despite that being an entirely fair point of view.

I guess that might just be the root of the problem. 10 years ago OoT was just about tied with SM64, because the game was fun.
The game isn't fun anymore, and the amount of runners reflect that. It's probably the same for the other games. But people still watch because they know the name.

Which there isn't a problem with that. But where Mario has continued to grow, despite no more growth in viewership than Zelda. Zelda has just declined and declined. Granted, some of the most popular zelda games to speedrun are awful now (Ocarina of Time for example).

I definitely agree completely with that. I'm just concerned with the fact that in the past there was a much greater carry over.
At least in all my time having been a spectator as well as runner, it seems like more than ever more people are watching as opposed to trying out runs for themselves.

TotK is a great example. 20-ish active runners of the game, it's literally a dead speedgame in terms of runs being submitted. BUT, it's short and longform content being made is super popular.
It's not because it's hard to start speedrunning. It's actually probably one of the easiest for beginners.

You'd think there'd be some relationship between the two, but there just isn't in practice. Super bizarre.

Just sucks when the few things that still bring me joy in life, just haven't been doing that. And I seriously don't think it's my fault. Games like Baldur's Gate 3 come along that are just amazing, and I'm not even into that kind of genre. It's just the stuff coming out in the genres I like, suck.

Like movies, games, etc.
Super hyped for Indiana Jones 5: Turns out not that great
Super hyped for TotK: Just isn't that great of a Zelda. Wonderful game, but not made for me.
Starfield: I mean...it's starfield.

Anyways TLDR; I lost access to my original email until recently and was able to get back a bunch of older accounts I had prior to 2018. got my twitch account from 2011 too, but wont be using that for obvious reasons.

I think it's buggy because I immediately changed my username and email to what it was on my other account. www.speedrun.com/users/Koroks
Should hopefully eventually reflect to show my old one? Unless this is just web browser cookies being weird.

Will still be doing runs of TP and grinding practice in-between, but that grind won't truly start until I get at least one more good PB in BotW.

Would I have thought I'd have WR's in a main line Zelda game 12 years from then? Definitely not.

I was 12 when I got into speedruns. Watching Siglemic and Narcissa Wright.
24 now...Kinda wild.
