The #fietsstraat, or #bike street, is the product of 30+ years of Dutch #cycling culture. It’s used when #bikes outnumber #cars to the point where bike lanes become congested. The motorist is considered a “guest.” B/c US drivers are overindulged, we aren’t ready for these.

A #bike parking post! 1. Utrecht Centraal. 2. Former Utrecht department store that’s now bike parking. 3. A ramp/rail with brushes in the Hoog Catherijne mall garage so you can go down steps with your bike w/o it rolling away from you. 4. Bike parking UNDER a canal next to the main train station.

In the 1960s, #Paris built Voie Georges Pompidou, an expressway that cut through its heart along the Seine. Today it is a park. Note how clear the sky is. That wasn’t the case when cars still jammed up here.

Secured bike parking! Loading zones for grocery stores that can also serve as pedestrian plazas! School streets where cars and dark pavement are replaced by greenery, light-colored pavement, and playing kids! Really strict do-not-enter signs! #Paris has it all! Ok, that last one is unofficial 😂

#Paris & #bikes thread: Pix 1&2- Separated, 2-way bikeways are still being added. This is on Rue Réaumur. 3- Lime Bikes are here and fairly easy to find & park. Geofencing is pretty strong, so they aren’t dumped on sidewalks, etc.
