Expressways that are no longer expressways: 1. Catherijnebaan, now Catherijnesingel, in Utrecht was once 10 lanes wide, including service roads. 2. Voie Georges Pompidou, now a multiuser path, carried 43,000 cars per day after its Left Bank counterpart was pedestrianized in 2013.

Instead of pushing #realestate developers to replace #parking facilities with #housing and other productive uses, the #Atlanta city council has opted to keep it cheap to clear-cut #trees. This will make the city’s heat island—already bad b/c of #climatechange— much worse. www.ajc.com/news/2025/06...

I’ve studied dictatorships. What often finally topples them are military mutinies. If the use of the National Guard & Marines that incited the Los Angeles protests triggers a mutiny which spreads to other cities facing occupation, the Trump regime will fall. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

We already know that ICE isn’t interested in following the law, so the news that they don’t obey the rules of the road isn’t a surprise.

Despite the hundreds of people who die around the world each day because of unsafe driving, Mars Wrigley thinks the subject is funny enough to include in their #advertising. What’s next? A chewing gum ad set in a mass shooting? A candy bar ad set in Ukraine? www.bbc.com/news/article...

I stand with #California.

Another streetcar project has been abandoned. This time it’s St. Paul, MN pulling the plug on a $730 million project. That money will now be repurposed to make it easier for buses, cyclists, and pedestrians to get around. www.startribune.com/st-paul-7th-...

@dillekamille.bsky.social The two on the far right aren’t from your stores, but the remaining 6 are. My wife and I got them over the years from stores in Breda, Ghent, Köln, Maastricht, and Utrecht. Now you need to make new designs 😁

The #fietsstraat, or #bike street, is the product of 30+ years of Dutch #cycling culture. It’s used when #bikes outnumber #cars to the point where bike lanes become congested. The motorist is considered a “guest.” B/c US drivers are overindulged, we aren’t ready for these.

Local politicians can be intimidated by loud NIMBYs when high density #housing is proposed near #transit stops. So, #California took the decision out of their hands. Will conservative states copy this rollback of regulations and enhancement of #propertyrights? www.sfchronicle.com/politics/art...

A #bike parking post! 1. Utrecht Centraal. 2. Former Utrecht department store that’s now bike parking. 3. A ramp/rail with brushes in the Hoog Catherijne mall garage so you can go down steps with your bike w/o it rolling away from you. 4. Bike parking UNDER a canal next to the main train station.

Some claim that #bike infrastructure is useless for those with #disabilities because of rain.☔️ ☹️ The Dutch solution? Tiny electric vehicles called “invalide autos”. They’re slow & smaller than most golf carts.🚗🔬 What do you think of these? Should they be allowed on US paths?

Here is my latest published article: “Evaluating Transportation Affordability,” ITE Journal (www.ite.org), June, pp. 45-50; at vtpi.org/ITEJ-eta-Jun.... It summarizes a longer report with the same name at www.vtpi.org/affordability.pdf. Please let me know what you think.

Hey, didn’t there used to be a 10-lane highway here? 🤔 Yup. 😁 Learn more about how this #Utrecht car sewer was replaced by a canal here: www.okra.nl/project/cath... Think about roads in your community that could use a similar treatment.

Got #bike lanes in your city? Then a small street sweeper like this is a MANDATORY purchase. If lanes aren’t kept clean, it can lead to tire punctures, mechanical issues with powered wheelchairs, and more. Don’t let your city just go through the motions with your #infrastructure. Maintain it!

#Film Quiz: what movie is this #Paris #bike bridge in? Hints: 1.”An idea is like a virus. Resilient. Highly contagious.” 2.”If You Can Steal An Idea, Why Can't You Plant One There Instead?” 3.”You Mustn’t Be Afraid To Dream A Little Bigger, Darling.” 4.”His subconscious is militarized.” See comments

This is #Breda, a small city in The #Netherlands, where those with mobility impairments have more freedom than in any US city. Cars aren’t allowed in the center. Buses, trams, subways, and streetcars aren’t in the center. What is here? Safe #infrastructure for people #walking and riding #bikes.

“Without #parking, nobody will go past my shop.” Okay, so let’s put in #bike parking (and get a massive crowd). Welcome to 🇳🇱.

In #France, they prioritized fast, comfy #trains for intercity travel. In the US, we rely on choked, exceptionally dangerous roads and awful #airports. Think about that.

In the 1960s, #Paris built Voie Georges Pompidou, an expressway that cut through its heart along the Seine. Today it is a park. Note how clear the sky is. That wasn’t the case when cars still jammed up here.

Secured bike parking! Loading zones for grocery stores that can also serve as pedestrian plazas! School streets where cars and dark pavement are replaced by greenery, light-colored pavement, and playing kids! Really strict do-not-enter signs! #Paris has it all! Ok, that last one is unofficial 😂

Well, this report from #Oakland looks bad: “They sent seven workers, five trucks, two police officers. They were out there for hours…What kind of budget does the city have for wrecking public safety improvements?” www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/arti...
