i know there are other more pertinent problems my mind should be working on.. but i can't stop thinking about this are onomatopoeic words more resistant to adaptation than proper nouns.. that seems upside down?

excellent thread, thank you @mjcrockett.bsky.social for sharing

Diversity is our greatest asset, even if the government disagrees… They not like us! POC in STEM are here to stay. They tried to rig the game but you can’t fake influence! Mustard on the [Be][At] bro. Happy Black History Month!

I will continue my approach to content as I always have. That means talking about racism. That means taking about disinformation.

Useful thread on supporting NSF program officers over these next few (stressful) months⬇️

miss you @lindsayhalladay.bsky.social , thinking of you and your brand new lab...

Not at all surprised. Such hypocrites…

Join us! Science Homecoming helps scientists reconnect with communities by writing about the importance of science funding in their hometown newspapers. We’ve mapped every small newspaper in the U.S. and provide resources to get you started. Help science get back home 🧪🔬🧬 🏠 sciencehomecoming.com

this, this is what i wake up angry about. it's not senior researchers or nameless "government bureaucrats" that are being harmed, it's a whole generation of talented young scientists, poised to do work they believe in that will impact us all. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/18/u...

Great thread on job openings around the world in science. Both academic and non-academic positions.

in science news from outside the US, this is beautiful and amazing... 🐋

Good blog post on describing why the NIH drop in IDC would have such negative effects. It is clear, non-technical and has things that can be done by everyone www.kateringland.com/the-hidden-b...

This 🧵 explains beautifully why my heart breaks when I try to answer questions from my undergrad students about the future of biomedical research. I try not to cause panic but I also want to be realistic. The future that they have been dreaming about is rapidly changing before our eyes. 💔

really looking forward to reading this..

I interviewed because I wanted to share the great work my colleagues and we have done for our first-year students. I wanted to highlighted the loss of this program for a rural PUI institution. Our future science leaders have the biggest loss and impact. No www.science.org/content/arti...

I hope you will all join me in expressing your thanks to the NIH and NSF staff who are working in an impossibly difficult and chaotic environment to keep science going in our country.

If you're interested in psycholinguistics, check out @fernandaedi.bsky.social's new book! An eBook version (not paperback) is now available & costs only $6.99 now (what a bargain)! It covers a wide range of topics, incl. some new/controversial topics (e.g., bilingual advantage, LLMs). Check it out!

colleagues and friends, don't go home for the weekend without remembering that this is still happening

So much this. Universities have processes and procedures to follow before making or changing anything or making any budgets. Administrators can’t just do things, or so I have frequently been assured.

I’m sad to learn that my law school classmate, Kiah Duggins, died in the DC plane crash last night. Kiah was an exceptionally talented civil rights lawyer and aspiring legal scholar. I hope you’ll read about her work and the causes she cared about, some of which I’ll 🧵 below. What an immense loss

The moral and ethical path is for universities to backstop these fellowships indefinitely. No one should suffer as political pawns, but it’s particularly tough to see it happening for talented people at a very difficult and precarious career stage.

National Science Foundation suspends salary payments, leaving researchers unable to pay their bills www.statnews.com/2025/01/30/t... Story by @ericboodman.bsky.social

Elementary schools get it - when you’re feeling like you can’t make a difference, take heart in doing what you CAN do!

Dear 🇺🇸 researchers: EDI-related work is supported & funded globally. Keep fighting to continue your work at home but also consider collaborating outside of USA, applying for international grants, etc. Please don’t stop doing the important health equity work many of you are doing! #academicchatter

Dear fellow scientists, Go talk to the press about what is going on. Talk to local news about how it will impact jobs. Be specific, but don't pity yourself. Instead focus on how your own situation affects local jobs, the national economy, beating the growing scientific race with China. Suggestions:

the threat of continued funding and review "pauses" at the NIH and NSF right now is not just harmful to the work of senior scientists.. there's a direct impact on trainees up and down the pipeline.

If you're a scientist that serves on an NSF panel that got cancelled today, I'd love to talk to you about it for an NPR story. DM, email or reach out on signal.

Did you know that by substituting your morning coffee with green tea, you can reduce up to 93% of what little joy you have left?

If you’ve been directly impacted by a pause or cancellation of an NIH study session, we @forbes.com would like to talk to you

great work that reminds us that the benefits of shared reading with young children come from *both* the book *and* the reader.. #ReadAloud #LangDev

The news

I assign MLK Jr’s APA speech in my classes (along with @neillewisjr.bsky.social’s excellent paper) and it always prompts so much discussion and reflection - great 🧵of highlights

what you do matters ❤️

does anyone have a good system for deciding on where (aka what journal) to send their most precious manuscripts? there are so many to choose from in #DevPsyc and #Cognition (as fields) that it always seems like a roll of the dice what the traffic might be like, how much time, impact...?

We are currently advertising for a permanent Lecturer in Developmental Psychology to join us here at Liverpool Hope University, UK. Further details can be found here: www.hope.ac.uk/aboutus/jobo... I would be very happy to speak with anyone who is interested in applying.

There once was a time that you didn’t yet realize you had hands. It’s a funny thought, but 100% true. In fact it’s not until somewhere between 2-4 months of age that babies fully “discover” their hands. (Thread 🧵)
