Å spela av høg lyd på elektroniske einingar på f.eks. tog og buss, er like ille som å sjå ei gravid dame måtta stå på bussen utan å tilby setet ditt til henne.

The word "shaman" has taken a long path to get to us. Starting with Sanskrit श्रमण (śramaṇa) -> Pali samaṇa -> Tocharian B ṣamāne -> Evenki шама̄н (shaman). And then Russian borrowed it from Evenki. German then borrowed it from Russian as Schamane. And finally English borrowed it as shaman

Exciting news from the Isle of Man. Iron Age spoons are incredibly rare; this is only the 28th example that we know of & implies trading of these special ritual tools west from Britain. Congratulations to the finder, landowner and Manx National Heritage 👏 manxnationalheritage.im/news/iron-ag...

One of the details that we didn't touch upon in this analysis of the Hole runestone-fragments, is the relationship between the gravefield and the surrounding landscape. Partly because it would be an enormous undertaking. One part of such an undertaking involves placenames. #placenames #runes 1/7

Sitting at a table in public, my 7-yearold was eavesdropping the ladies next to us who were speaking French. After a while, the child asks "are they Franks"? Franks... I said yes.

Flere gamle ord: vidje.

A new article presents the context and dating frames of the runestone fragments found at Hole in Norway. It is an interesting puzzle with many exciting details, one of them being the possible early dating of the runic script itself. doi.org/10.15184/aqy...

Bone and antler was the common medium for #Mesolithic #Art, usually red/roe deer, wild boar & aurochs. But there are a few exotic exceptions: Surprised zoologists declared that this dagger was made from the bill of a #Swordfish. There is archaeological consensus that its owner must have had style🏺⚔️🐟

Jackson Crawford and I had a fun conversation about sexual slang in Old Norse, and even touched upon the traces of swearing. This topic is a horn of plenty. www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmkH...

One of the biggest open questions in prehistory is where and how the Indo-European languages originated and spread. A newish paper sheds some very interesting light on this issue, so here's a thread on it. IE languages are spoken by nearly half of humanity. Map shows the homelands of the main ones
