Great works don't arrive fully formed. They limp onto the page, bleeding and broken from poor word choice and half-baked ideas. But nobody sees that version. They see the one that has been patched up, rebuilt, chiseled, shaped, and molded. And that version readers will assume came out fully formed.

"Bad" and so-so reviews also lend credibility to all of the reviews. If there are only glowing, 5 star reviews, it kind of looks like you just paid for them or got your friends to review or something. Bad reviews make your book look legitimate, like all kinds of readers are coming to it organically
