NIH continues to fund non-competing awards...except for guess who? drugmonkey.wordpress.com/2025/02/21/n...

Cuts to NSF expected to be at 50% reduction in force for an independent agency that fuels discovery and innovation. "The NSF budget was $9B, or 0.13% of the total [budget]." This is not about fiscal prudence. This is about killing universities. nanoscale.blogspot.com/2025/02/the-...

““This crisis — and I’m not exaggerating by calling it a crisis — has already consumed one funding cycle…But if this block to publishing in the register continues on much longer, it’s going to swallow two funding cycles, and that will put many labs out of business.” @labonnelab.bsky.social

The University of Pittsburgh confirmed Friday that there would be no new Ph.D. offers of admission while Pitt works to understand how reduced federal aid could impact the institution.

DEI initiatives are still legal. Universities need to stand their ground. A Friday gift to your university's General Counsel Office - courtesy of an all star lineup of civil rights lawyers and scholars. You're going to want to read this.

And to put it clearly - academic freedom is not the same as free speech & expression. When academic freedom is replaced with free speech & expression what we are saying is expertise doesn't matter. It is a means to de-professionalize faculty as teachers & scholars.

In this time, it is important to remember that academic freedom flows from the fact faculty members are professionals with expertise. We both individually and collectively determine what is taught in our classes based on that expertise. We conduct research in the context of our expertise. 1/2

Very important to get this word out!

Update: This ***NSF-funded*** study is now published in MBE. Today more than ever, I'm appreciative of what all the people at NSF do to support our science. Let's fight to support them. doi.org/10.1093/molb...

URLs for NSF staff directories are now redirecting to "Unavailable" and "Page Not Found." To state the obvious, a crisis.

“The catch? ED and OCR do not have an easy way to carry out their threat.” Fascinating deep read of the Friday Dear Colleague Letter. The hypernormalization continues with a carnival of contrary and incoherent threats which are nonetheless actually scary and potentially actionable.

Yet another heartbreaking and short sighted decision. The folks at NSF are so supportive of the scientific community. Their funding is what has allowed my lab to grow and succeed. These cuts are so destructive.

The OCR sent a lousy Valentine's Day gift to higher ed this year. My latest "What's Up in the Academy?" newsletter tackles the Department of Education's "Dear Colleague" letter and argues against automatically bending the knee. #HigherEdSky #AcademicSky open.substack.com/pub/drdeveau...

This morning, the National Science Foundation fired 168 probationary employees, effective immediately. The number represents roughly 10% of its workforce. Follow Science’s coverage of President Donald Trump’s impact on U.S. research and science globally. ⬇️ scim.ag/40XtSSi

Kudos to the school administrator who wrote this letter for making it clear to families what happened and who they should blame. This is the way to build a coalition--with a shared adversary and a reason to fight.

Thanks to all of the NIHers and their friends who reached out to me. I am still here (DM me or Signal jeremymberg.78) I still have a very incomplete picture but based on what I have been told, the damage to NIH and to many wonderful people who work(ed) there is/was impossible for me to imagine 1/n

everybody needs to be aware of this. unconscionable actions designed to destroy, hurt, humiliate, and disillusion. @nytimes.com @wired.com @npr.org please report on this and find a way to help readership outside the "blue bubble" learn about this devastation and its consequences.

On Friday night, HHS ordered CDC to take down all flu vaccine campaign materials from its website. Materials are starting to come down. For example, a campaign explaining that flu shot can reduce flu severity from "wild to mild" is now offline. Left image is from Friday, right is now Meanwhile...

There is a left critique of DEI: that it is an *insufficient* liberal project which fails to address the structural nature of racial capitalism and thus contributes to its reproduction. This is diff from the obnoxious ‘anti-woke’ putatively left position, which is basically hostile to racial justice

“This is indiscriminate, cruel, and is taking a wrecking ball to both the deep institutional knowledge of the agency and its future.” www.science.org/content/arti...

The abrupt terminations of more than 1,000 employees, including new Epidemic Intelligence Officers, across CDC are deeply disturbing. For more than 70 years, EIS officers have served on America’s front line as its disease detectives, ready at a moment’s notice to respond to emerging outbreaks.

The outrage over Nixon's "Saturday Night Massacre" came when the top two officials at the DOJ resigned rather than follow his corrupt orders. These posts aren't as prominent, but their resignations should help force more attention on the insanely corrupt bargain between Adams and Trump.

Howard is R1! ….juuust in time for <waves hands at everything>…. #glasscliff

I don’t want to make a stopped clock joke. Past events notwithstanding, this is a serious and well-articulated statement and in a serious country it would obviously have carried the day. But we don’t live in a serious country right now.

If you know a biochemist (or related scientist) who is interested in teaching, Skidmore Chemistry is searching for a three-year VAP position to teaching in our biochemistry and introductory chemistry sequences beginning this Fall. #ChemSky eodq.fa.us6.oraclecloud.com/hcmUI/Candid...

This is a flat-out, clear-cut violation of the First Amendment.

I think it's worth repeating plainly that a federal judge halted Musk's federal funding freeze nearly two weeks ago but funds are still very much being frozen in violation of the court order.

In the light of the US dismantling DEI, if there are any US chemistry departments/companies who would like an online webinar on #LGBTSTEM issues, I can give one. I offer three variants (details in AltText). Happy to do at no personal charge, but will insist on a donation to local US LGBT+ charities.

There's a missing word in "We believe in the power of and respect for all chemists"; there was "diversity" in the original page but I guess that won't appear. At least the linked document still reads "diversity, equity, inclusion, and respect (DEIR)" but its hyperlink became "the 2024 ACS statement"

Eric Adams sold out this city to get the Trumps to fix his personal problem, simple as that.
