Great slide from @kstsosie.bsky.social - don’t just say you’re engaging with a community to get your funding, sincerely engage with it #AGBTGM #AGBT25

@kstsosie.bsky.social summarizing the challenges of indigenous genomics and solutions thereto #AGBTGM

As I prepare for my invited plenary talk for the AGBT Meeting tomorrow with this uninterrupted view, I am filled with proud for my students, my colleagues & our collective work in Indigenous genomics, health & digital technologies. #AGBTGM #AGBT25 Tsosie Lab (tsosielab.org)!

Last push for final application to our one-week workshop on #Indigenous #Health and Artificial Intelligence! IndigiData is held this summer on the Tribal lands of the Ak-Chin Indian Community in Central AZ, June 2-6, 2025: indigidata.org Apply: 01/31 (Not reliant on federal funds)

I am tired of settler-scientists only recognizing Indigenous science when they have something to gain (e.g. grant funding, access to Indigenous communities’ data, clout). This is not equity nor benefit sharing. This is straight up extraction, exploitation, and scientific colonialism.

NativeBio with @kstsosie.bsky.social came up with a great program for scientific research and training called #Indigidata. It can be applied to non-native populations as well. We are the past. We are the future. Please share this with your staff and colleagues www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_hd...

TOMORROW: An international panel of Indigenous geneticists to discuss the ethical, cultural, legal, and clinical utility of #Indigenous reference #genomes. Sponsored by the National Institutes of Health Tribal Health Research Office: @kstsosie.bsky.social @blackochreomics.bsky.social Phil Wilcox

It's impossible to overstate how excited I am to be joining ASU and become a part of the incredible community of Indigenous scientists there! @kstsosie.bsky.social news.asu.edu/20241122-sun...

Eleven of 12 members of the Tsosie Lab for Indigenous #Genomic #Data Equity & Justice (tsosielab.org). 75% Indigenous mentees across all levels: PI, postdocs, PhD students, undergrads.... just representing #Indigenous #science at an R1 institution, Arizona State Univ! @caterpillar-coevo.bsky.social

I guess it's time to reintroduce myself: I'm Jay. I study the ecology and evolution of plant-insect interactions using a combination of omics approaches and field experimentation. I'm especially interested in how toxic plants in the nightshade family have co-evolved with specialist herbivores.

Excellent discussion by Dr Krystal Tsosie on Indigenous genomic data, indigenous data sovereignty, & bioethics. Especially I love the nuances she discusses & the advocating for meaningful representation & inclusion of indigenous peoples to ensure their interests are protected. @kstsosie.bsky.social

Myself and @nativebio.bsky.social were honored to be part of this historic and monumentally groundbreaking event. Led by the Amazing @kstsosie.bsky.social www.cshl.edu/wp-content/u...

This was a historic moment. The largest convening of #Indigenous geneticists, data scientists, physicians to include national leaders at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory's #science think tank, the Banbury Institute @cshlbanbury.bsky.social, to discuss Indigenous reference #genomes and implications:

Thank you to participants of "An 'Indigenous Reference Genome': Ethical, Cultural, Policy, and Governance Considerations" for three days of thoughtful discussions, led by the incredible @kstsosie.bsky.social View the agenda here: bit.ly/IRG-24

Some of y’all live under the impression that slide decks are available well in advance (as opposed to hours before), and that’s the type of energy I wish I still had. 😆

To close out #ASHG24, we convened several Indigenous movement makers for genomics education for Tribal Colleges and American Indian/Alaska Native serving institutions! Part of the ASHG-NHGRI partnership.

For the 2nd time this month, Tsosie Lab is featured nationally. This article beautifully highlights the biodiversity and genomics work of postdoc fellow Dr. Leke Hutchins (Kānaka ‘Ōiwi). So many great Indigenous scholar voices in this article! www.science.org/content/arti...

Listen now to Dr. Krystal Tsosie on the impacts of AI and data in the cloud on Indigenous genetic and bioethic research, and why she pushes for Indigenous scientists to also be advocates, on the new Privacy on the Ground podcast! podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/p...

Data is a resource, and Indigenous nations want theirs back. In today’s episode, we talk with Dr. Stephanie Carroll and Dr. Krystal Tsosie about the growing field of Indigenous data sovereignty. Listen here 🎧: pod.link/73329284

“I thought Native Americans were extinct,” a mail carrier told Diné genetic epidemiologist Krystal Tsosie when she explained the origin and meaning of her last name. A spotlight on #Indigenous science in this #IndigenousPeoplesDay edition of #ScienceAdviser: www.science.org/content/arti... 🧪

Very pleased to announce that I will be joining the School of Life Sciences at Arizona State University as a Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow next year! I will be working on various projects related to the evolutionary genetics of plants and insects in the Sonoran Desert with Prof. Krystal Tsosie

If you approach me at a conference, and your ONLY question after hearing me talk about Indigenous genomic data equity is still "how can I recruit Indigenous peoples into my study?", I am going to call you creepy and run away before you steal my DNA.

Scientists: your supposed wokeness is performative if you do not realize your positionality. Just saw two non-Native researchers self-congratulate at length about the "success" of their outreach to Tribal peoples. Yet, Indigenous researchers familiar to the space are side-eyeing each other. Sigh.

You faculty without teaching commitments are adorable for questioning why collaborators tend to be delayed with communications at the start of academic semesters.

Great Data Sovereignty READ featuring Native BioData Consortium and our cofounders, @kstsosie.bsky.social, Keolu Fox, and Matt Anderson. Thanks, @samjscience.bsky.social Nature journal “We have seen an egregious abuse of power, an egregious culture of extraction.” Keolu Fox, NativeBio cofounder.

Two of my students (PhD student & undergrad) will be presenting at the American Society of Human Genetics 2024 Annual Meeting in Denver!! From being on the mentee side to now the mentor side of this great meeting is super exciting, and I cannot wait to see you all Nov 5-9! ashg.org/meetings/202...

Last week, our Lab taught Indigenous high school students from AZ Tribal Nations on ecological data. Our STEAM activity profiled Indigenous scholars (and themselves as STEM leaders!) through art. 🖼️ Here’s mine. “When I grow up, I want to be Associate Professor” and “Sleep more”

Our lichen data server was down earlier. Giving renewed life to the popular adage “a non-rolling bryophyte portal gathers no moss.” I’m sure you’ve heard of it. #biodiversity #genomics #DNA

So glad @kstsosie.bsky.social was able to come speak about indigenous data sovereignty and -omics for our Section of Computational Biomedicine today - lots to think about and take action on in the ways we interact with and use biobanked and previously-generated data.

We will host our Summer 2024 workshop on the theme “Our Data Relations: Kinship, Stewardship, Sovereignty in Biodiversity and Biocollections” to take place on the lands of the Salt-River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community in AZ week of June 3-7. Please apply: t.ly/kx0D1

My PhD student just had his first acceptance! This is one of many reasons why diverse mentors matter, so that we can uplift our own and others

What a delight to hear the voice of @kstsosie.bsky.social when I got into my car on NPR's 1A about the important topic of Indigenous data sovereignty. She discusses some of the motivation for her work in my book #WomeninScience Now (portrait below from the book) #WomeninSTEM
