I spoke with Justin Hendrix of @techpolicypress.bsky.social about my upbringing, what led me to community organizing, and building @blacksky.app. Available wherever you listen to podcasts. (Justin, thanks for using the new website for the thumbnail!)

So many writer friends coming out with their debut novels this year. I’m so proud. I can’t wait to scream at all of their book launches.

Stop asking Black women to fix the shit you broke.

Thanks for everyone’s patience while we transitioned to an independent company on the Open Collective platform. Also thank you to our previous fiscal host @oscollective.org for their support. You can once again sponsor Blacksky’s work with a monthly contribution using the link below.

probably the most mischievous grin ever

During Black History Month is crazy. Don't piss me off.

Silent reading time is my love language

Kudos to Chappell. I have never had health insurance. It is HARD. An excerpt from my coming book, In My Remaining Years. These things are important to discuss.

Beyoncé finally won Album of the Year, and Kendrick Lamar pulled off two remarkable major category victories at the #GRAMMYs. While Beyoncé and Lamar earned the big prizes, several Grammy newcomers also left an indelible mark on this year’s show.

FINALLY!!!!!! 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝

This one's for the CMAs. BEYONCE IS ONE OF ONE!!!!!!!!!

Excited to announce that as of Feb 1 I'll be starting as a fellow at the Applied Social Media Lab at @harvard.edu's Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society, working on @blacksky.app. Much appreciation to @jbellack.bsky.social for his support and belief in what we're building with Blacksky.

an exhausting week for sure

Like so many of you, my friend @maggiesmithpoet.bsky.social and I have been having a conversation about this country’s future. Now we’re turning our dialogue into a book featuring poems and essays from Marlon James, Alexander Chee, Ashley C. Ford, Chase Strangio, Imani Perry and more!

🪩🛼 My publisher @penguinteen.bsky.social is giving away galleys of UNDER THE NEON LIGHTS, my debut YA novel-in-verse, on Goodreads until Feb. 3! If you're eager to read it, enter the giveaway here: goodreads.com/giveaway/ent...

HAPPY MLK DAY BLACKSKY!!!!

I suspect we’ll need this a lot over the next few months. How to report anti-black posts/accounts. bsky.app/profile/rudy...

“Michelle Obama is the biggest gangster I know.” — @rudyfraser.com

A (soft) launch for a new writing venture today!

This was a cool mention from last year/month that I haven’t shared on here. Shout out to @docdre.distributedblackness.net

How to critically read a text. This is what the author wrote, here’s one way to interpret what they’re saying and here’s why I think it’s interesting or significant. It’s an invaluable skill. And increasingly rare across different mediums.

Clicking the Blacksky hashtag is not the same as using the Blacksky feed. The feed is linked below. It is chronologically ordered and the content is curated through human moderation, automation, and some pre-filtering logic. The community of users also proactively reports content to @blacksky.app

My only remaining 2024 wish is that you preorder my debut YA novel-in-verse, UNDER THE NEON LIGHTS 🛼✨ www.penguinteen.com/978059385859...

We’re in South America so I am way behind buuuut Beyoncé is a consummate star. That halftime show! The songs! The coordination. The design. The lewks. Outstanding.

Beyoncé and Blue Ivy perform at the #BEYONCEBOWL

@honeymummy.co we’ll be screaming about these photos forever 🤧🔥

What do you do with an open social network? One good option is what @rudyfraser.com is doing: Building "the app within the app" if not "the app beyond the app." The Blacksky feed, labeler, & community - and also a separate implementation of atproto - that bluesky doesn't own

"But [Rudy] welcomes the expansion. Because of the open-source platform Bluesky is built on, it can, in theory, be essentially replicated by anyone, at any time, should, say, some mogul buy it overnight. If Blacksky gets strong enough, it can determine its own future."

Here are some books from my fellow Flatiron 2024 debuts that you should absolutely give to friends this holiday season!

I’ve been holding this in but… seems remiss not to recall the assassination of the abortion doctors? The bombing of clinics? Why act as if this is without that context?

Finally, some good news!

A legacy. sleep in power, Nikki Giovanni!✨

It's the first day of #LibFaves24 where librarians count down their 10 favorite books of 2024 (1 per day)! My number 10 pick is LET THE GAMES BEGIN by Rufaro Faith Mazarura. The Olympics were a highlight of 2024 and this Olympics-set romance was the perfect complement.

It strikes me as incredibly interesting how much more attention and care the powers that be (media, police departments, politicians) give to rich people who die compared to everyone else.
