Canada has a real problem with getting smart passionate people to the upper levels of the public sector

“Are we building for cars or people?” Christopher Ballard spoke to local urbanist @mylesrussellnl.bsky.social for this article about how St. John’s should build new denser urban housing while reducing the city’s car-dominant culture by ditching parking minimums.

The freight guys have really started freaking out over the past 48-72 hours:

I am immensely relieved to see that my suspicions were wrong and this man is alive. Thank you, Senator Van Hollen, for showing why it is important and worthwhile to push back. apnews.com/article/abre...

I wrote about this back in the fall. Trumpism's takeover of the GOP not only drove all the actually competent people out, but has made it impossible for the GOP to cultivate genuine talent and competence. So they have no choice but to look to the far less talented and the incompetent to fill roles.

This will not be a test of democracy or the rule of law in America - those are already gone. But this will be a test on whether the Constitution has *any* meaning left whatsoever. Nothing is as clear as birthright citizenship is in the US Constitution. www.cnn.com/2025/04/17/p...

Toronto essentially stopped outward growth, while simultaneously within the built up urban area, near massive rail Transit lines, this is the attitude towards *building homes for people*. If things don't change asap, were cooked!

If you've wondered if Toronto is taking the housing crisis seriously yet, a tree deemed unsafe by an arborist is removed. People "mourn" (little mourning for the young people who's futures are uncertain in housing crisis) and an implication is made that this is because of condos.

The *one thing* people like Bessent and Warsh have decided to push back on is firing Powell. Tells you a lot.

behold, Halifax's 0.5-mm raised intersection (Stanley/Isleville) – apparently an error?

I don't know what I was expecting when I looked up the city's tax designation map, but this wasn't it. Like, 80% of the urban tax bracket could be classified as "trees" and "single family homes"

Vietnam going to learn the hard way that you can’t make deals with this man.

The big question is: why wasn't this story run by a Canadian news outlet? My answer: Canadian news outlets are unusually blindsided about the wrongdoing of our own governments, especially provincial ones. For example, there is a big Ontario agency that would definitely be worth looking into...

I'm back with a livestream series! First "episode" is tomorrow night! These will be pretty structured with preset topics, and a short Q&A at the end, set a reminder and come say hi! youtube.com/live/ul6TKS8...

Tiny homes are aesthetic RVs and we need to stop pretending this is a solution and instead realize it’s a raging, five alarm symptom. You’re forcing people into depreciating structures because we are more amenable to building parking lots than housing, and highways than infill.

This is good and you should watch it. I’ve criticized Ezra for being an “abundance bro” who wants to pivot towards economic policy but this isn’t that, it’s a full and unsparing description of Trump’s lawlessness. He acknowledges that’s not his instinct but he does it anyway.

Bike lanes are basically Fast Pedestrian lanes. Send skeet.

I sympathize with feeling fear to do your job but I feel strongly the remedy is to quit your job, not to stop doing it, especially when people rely on you to do your job.
