Fwiw one thing university faculty can do is provide simple explainers for their students on how federal funding works and how cuts to higher ed & endowment taxes will concretely damage their education and possibly spike tuition costs Many students don’t know how university finances work!

My fear is that the Trump administration arrested Mahmoud Khalil to make an example out of him because they’re gambling Dems won’t put their jobs and lives on the line to protect a Palestinian.

It is STUNNING to me that I cannot find a resource where someone has actually written up serious articles of impeachment. How could this be? This is a country of over 1 million lawyers!

Let's be really really clear. The Trump admin chose a Palestinian activist as the target of its first lawless political detention precisely BECAUSE they believe that will split the opposition. If you shrug at the abduction of Mahmoud Khalil, or worse, cheer it on, you're following Trump's script.

There's no difference between black bagging a legal permanent resident, and a citizen. Both are equally illegal. If they're willing to do one, they're willing to do the other.

Niemoller voted for the Nazis several times inc in 1933. He was antsemitic (he thought the jews killed Christ). Still, he did not like that Christian converts w a Jewish background fell under the new discriminatory laws. Overall, that led to his arrest and stay in a concentration camp until 1945 1/

I was listening to Trevor Noah interview Robert Putnam of Bowling alone while making Ilhan Omar's hot dish. Putnam says that Trump weaponized the nation's loneliness to come to power and that even if we get through this US democracy remains vulnerable until we fix that (interview was in January) /1

So much of Democratic voters' energy has had to be focused on getting people they voted for to fight. It's sad. That diverts time they could be doing other things.

The celebration of "hardcore" work culture is keeping us from gender equality. If men can only be "successful" by working so much they're eating every meal at the office, then they have incentive to avoid any care work that might pull them away. Which means pushing all the care onto women instead.

💯. And the corollary is that anyone who wants to be "successful" can't be a fully present parent even if they want to be. The culture makes you pick between parenting and work. (Or even, like, having hobbies or non-work friends, for that matter.)

Fascism: “Columbia University recently set up an office that is secretly investigating its students for political statements about Israel, Drop Site News reported this week, and is requiring students to sign non-disclosure agreements to view the evidence being brought against them.”

Breaking: ICE arrests a Palestinian student at Columbia, Mahmoud Khalil, whose wife is 8 months pregnant. They revoked his student visa and his green card. BOYCOTT COLUMBIA. WRITE & Demand answers. This is fucking sickening. zeteo.com/p/breaking-d...

"Embrace diversity. Unite— Or be divided, robbed, ruled, killed By those who see you as prey. Embrace diversity Or be destroyed." — Octavia E. Butler, 'Parable of the Sower'

oh thank heavens someone did an analysis rather than just not entertaining this bullshit

But beware. Our government has repeatedly not delivered on such promises, or offered subpar conditions. Check the small print.

A friend was at Berkeley picket today & she emailed to let me know that she was approached by an older couple wondering what was going on. She explained and they are from Iowa and wanted to know if there were any pickets in their town as they would like to attend. Low entry opportunities are imp.

The US literally didn't vote for a day of hope ostensibly because "of woke". When some of us that were targeted warned that gamergate et al were precursors to this, we were laughed at. But even I didn't realise how far it would go.

More loss of public data. Journalists and researchers, please keep a final copy of everything you’ve worked on, clips, datasets, etc. We can figure out how to alt-internet things if we HAVE it

I want to reiterate that these pickets MUST include handouts and fliers for passerbys. It's essential.

“Once you decide that a single vulnerable minority can be sacrificed, you’re operating within a fascist logic,” they said. “That means there might be a second one you’re willing to sacrifice and a third, a fourth. Then what happens?”

Explaining to the kids about how bad it is when websites get straight up deleted because not everything gets archived and was asked very earnestly if it's possible that 538 is now on A03 and now I need to go lay down for the night

There was a lot of #AcademicFreedom, good scholarship, and independent thought in German universities before Hitler. After Hitler had risen to power, many academics fled the country. Some resisted the Nazi regime and were persecuted. Most adapted to a new situation. Here are some examples. 1/n

Episodes like this are why I feel like some people on platforms like this—who are Way Too Online and only talk to other Extremely Online people—negatively polarise themselves into an impression of liberalism that bears no relationship to how ordinary people in the real world actually practice it.

Insecure men aren’t scared of women. They are terrified of feeling useless and irrelevant, especially in the eyes of other men. It’s status anxiety.

So fun fact - people on the left *are* working with young men. Like I got a whole ass partner who spends all his time doing that. People just sorta ignore that because it doesn't make for good headlines, and also people like saying we need to bring back the subjugation of women.

this argument about left scolding sounds initially plausible but does not survive contact with hearing how these manosphere people talk to young men

the "manosphere" -and hegemonic masculinity in general - seems like a classic case of a drug you take for a problem that only makes the problem worse

“Given the First Amendment’s protection of a university’s freedom to determine its own curriculum and how to deliver it, the constitutional violation behind this threat is clear, as is the attack on the University’s mission as a Jesuit and Catholic institution,” Treanor wrote.

BE NOT AFRAID

Montana is extremely lucky to have Zooey Zephyr and SJ Howell standing up in front of openly transphobic lawmakers who wanted to pass a bill that would /take trans kids away from their parents./ Thank you to them, and to the Republicans who crossed the aisle. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

ABC News has now fully taken down the old 538 website, including all interactive projects since 2014. Aside from erasing history this prevents access to publicly released data, including raw polls, averages, model estimates & story dta. Totally unacceptable for a company (allegedly) doing journalism

538-style poll collection has now been recreated by a small group of fans and former staff. all fully transparent and public now. return of live public aggregation is imminent docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

I post one gym pic with an arm flex. Post about men’s confused and harmful reactions to visibility muscular / athletic women. Now my mentions are in meltdown about trans women in sports. Deflecting from the actual issue - men’s insecurities and urge to control what women should be or look like.

It's almost always a safe bet that Donald Trump is NOT bluffing He might not achieve what he wants, he might get held back, and we might not learn about the attempt until well after the fact, but it's usually safe to say he will TRY to make his most nutty ideas happen

I was in the 75th class of Fulbright Scholars, apparently, the last class It was the best year of my life: I had my daughter & it was transformative to my work Fulbright was an opportunity for nerds who wanted to make the world better I’m very sad today for my future Fulbrighter and all of them

I spoke with Levin Kim, President of @higheredlabor.bsky.social and Todd Wolfson, President of @aaup.bsky.social about the chaos in higher education and research caused by the Trump Administration www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Any constitutional law scholars or observers follow me? I'm trying to find out if anyone has any website or anything to point to which is updating the impeachable offenses the President has committed. And hopefully has written the damn impeachment articles!

This is good. The bigots are not all-powerful. They're trying to do the worst things they can imagine, but they can be pushed back. Keep pushing back, and keep supporting the people and groups who are pushing back.
