DQ1 is in a similar category to Wolf3D where it's such a well-executed, basic concept that it's basically immune to aging. Other games definitely do more, but DQ1 is the perfect version of what it is setting out to accomplish

I've always had a soft-spot for stories like that. Where some grand, potentially cataclysmic event happens and the world is forever changed but people are just kinda okay with it after a while.
I like the quietly hopeful idea that things will change. We won't be able to go back, but it'll be okay.
