Tropical Cyclone #Alfred is slowly strengthening in the Coral Sea. Currently well offshore from north Queensland, Alfred is expected to turn southeast and intensify midweek. While its future path remains uncertain, it could approach the Queensland coast over the coming days.

More of this is going on

BREAKING NEWS: A powerful 7.0 earthquake has struck off the northern California coast. A tsunami warning has been issued. The tsunami warning stretches hundreds of miles from the Bay Area of California north into central Oregon.

Snow squalls are coming. Lake effect to follow overnight.

Another winter storm comes. After digging out from the first blast of lake effect, another round comes in tomorrow night and Thursday. Very strong winds accompany this.

6 years ago this evening near Beardstown, Illinois - one of ~5 tornadoes I observed during the December 1st, 2018 tornado outbreak - none more photogenic than this one. The calendar said climatological winter but forecast soundings said classic supercells.

Tampa Bay has work to do: 126 flood pumps and 40 sewage lift stations malfunctioned or lost power during Milton, putting over 20 million gallons of sewage into Tampa Bay. A recommendation: Solar power generators! www.tampabay.com/news/hillsbo...

That is some convective lake effect snow coming off Lake Ontario into the Tug Hill. Whew. Not quite megaband status yet but not far off.

Just a bit of elevation difference making a big difference for snow accumulations in the Albany area. NYSM camera images at Voorheesville (375 ft elevation) vs UAlbany (250 ft):

The ultimate chasecation trip planner plot. Based on 2,000 documented Great Plains supercells and tornadoes since 1990, and sans inflation of multi-storm outbreaks, here's just the likelihood that each day gives you a storm:

While we don't have a presence yet on Blue Sky, Michigan Storm Chasers released our snowfall totals for the multi day Lake Effect event from overnight Thursday through Tuesday.

18z Euro continues the Lake Effect madness, 12z had strong support from ensembles, so far, 18z ensembles contunue support.

So much pain in the extended outlook for Alaska. Everything after day 6 or 7 is incredibly warm and there is no end in sight. It will be a brutal first half of December around here. This map shows the probability of being 10F above normal on Dec 6th. @alaskawx.bsky.social

Ahhhhh I passed my phd preliminary exams lets go

November 25-29th, 1921: New England was in the midst of a four-day ice storm. Following the storm, ice was more than three inches thick in many places, and property damage was in the millions of dollars. Northern New England received heavy snow, with more than two feet reported in some areas.

Who wants a white Thanksgiving? This guy. Euro ensemble average creeping north.

How has your 2024 been when it comes to NWS Storm Prediction Center outlooks? Here are the spots that have seen at least one of the four major categories (or higher) up through today.

Bomb cyclone goes boom. An incredible view of the deepening low pressure system approaching the Pacific Northwest.

Dear storm chasers, No one gives a shit about how many tornadoes you've seen.

Here we go. Enumclaw just hit a gust of 60 mph. North Bend hit a gust of 50 mph. These next few hours are going to be the nailbiters for the foothills. 😬 #wawx

I haven't gotten the snowbrush out yet, I don't want to either, but it looks like I need to dig it out.

I'm ready to see the first flakes of the season Thursday. Looks like a slushy inch or two on the grass is likely right now for Grand Rapids.

The incipient low for the cyclone forecast to impact the Pacific NW tomorrow looked completely unremarkable late this morning (circled, left). In 36 hours, it is forecast to deepen from 1016mb to 947mb. It is a marvel of modern weather forecasting that these features can be skillfully forecast.

Guess it is as good of a time as any to say this is my first week as a Senior Hurricane Specialist at NHC. Last month marked 4 years since I started at NHC & it has been an incredibly humbling yet fulfilling experience. It is an honor to keep on doing what I love, to help save lives & property. 🌀

One of my all time favorite chases, this strong and slow moving, and meandering EF-3 tornado lasted 30min and took on many forms from a dusty wedge to a vertical stovepipe and this gnarly cone. 08-08-23, Yuma, Colorado.

What’s that [weird thing] on my WSR-88D radar image? The NOAA Radar Operations Center (ROC) published this definitive guide. Even I hadn’t heard of a few of these (like terrain spikes): www.roc.noaa.gov/public-docum...

The 18z GEFS putting out a couple of inches of snow. Has been consistent on this for a few runs now.

Fun day to be a cloud in the Wichita Mountains!! ☁️

I’ve finally made the Bluesky transition! For my first post, a summary of one of the best science years of my life: so many new experiences, rocks, fossils, collaborations, & fun adventures 😍 6 field work excursions: the San Juan and Colorado Rivers, Moab, Escalante, and Montana!

As a history nerd on the side, it’s fascinating trying to look into the history of meteorology and how our field came to be what it is today. There’s so many small or obscure details lost to time — for example, Charles Darwin makes multiple appearances in early meteorology history.

Well, good morning to Super Typhoon Man-Yi, I guess

A Wunderground PWS has reported almost 24 inches of rain from #Sara, so far, in La Ceiba, Honduras. wunderground.com/dashboard/pw... La Ceiba Airport: 17.20 inches (437 mm) in the last 24 hours through 12am CT. Sara still has another 48 hours to crawl north of the Honduran coast!

My new role is also going to force me to focus a little more on Midwest weather, especially for Minnesota and southern Indiana. So you may see more about that from me in the future.

There’s still just enough uncertainty that some sort of impact to Florida can’t be completely ruled out, but today’s trends have been towards a much weaker storm that fails to make it north of Central America — a Florida hurricane is much less likely to happen.

More rain in the forecast today into tonight. It won't be a lot, but anything is appreciated at the moment! Probably mainly dry locally into at least midday or early afternoon.

❄️ The U.S. is getting less snowy, according to 60 years of meteorological records. In today's Climate Lab column, see this winter’s forecast in your county and find out if it gets less snow now than it used to. Gift link: wapo.st/3CjsMaD

Rainy day today at KDTW

Almost all guidance this morning abandoned the idea of tropical depression 19 becoming more than a weak tropical storm. The outlier is the HWRF… but its track already deviates way north of the model consensus (and current observations) at hour 24, meaning far less land interaction.

20 yrs ago today a heavy wet snow storm hit Nova Scotia. Temperatures very close to zero led to a thick buildup of icy snow cylinders on electrical lines in Dartmouth, the eventual collapse of electrical towers, and a prolonged power outage. #NSStorm
