All Summer in a Day (1954) - I only knew this story through the lens of reference so I finally read it. The prose is aching, beautiful. A very sad ending... But I found it interesting that this original tale stresses that Margot may move back to Earth, offering a comfort I didn't know was there.

Blue Velvet (1986) — Continuing on the Lynch journey, I had always wanted to watch this one and yet somehow never so much as looked at a summary. Every actor sizzles, the soundtrack soars. The great evil on display here is chilling, but Lynch's dreamy dialogue brings it all home.

American Psycho (2000) — just absolutely blissful, a hedonistic spiral into the bustle of a modern life that has never slowed down, identical white businessmen joylessly coasting through lives they don't enjoy or engage with. Bale, DeFoe and Witherspoon shine like stars.

WOW I fell behind! Mulholland Drive (2001) — this year I made a resolution to catch up on media I felt I "ought to have watched" by now and boy, was I glad to get on this one. Just a master class in perspective, toxic lesbianism, and moody lighting.

Have you seen the Herzog Nosferatu? I watched it before the 2024 one and found the 2024 lacking because of it (although Holt was a standout for the reasons you already talked about)

Unfortunately the Herzog movie is better in every considerable way and Isabel Adjani is impossible to transcend
