This is untenable. #ANU is in chaos. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) has just resigned "to travel around Australia". Spill the leadership.

Mr Sheldon concluded: "At a time when Ms Bishop has been accusing university staff of being the cause of ANU’s financial problems, it appears to me, on the surface, that she’s been leveraging university funds on political staffers and employees of her company."

This sort of behaviour by Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors undermines confidence in our sector. Senator Tony Sheldon's revelations last night of the #ANU Chancellor's money for mates is a preview of the Parliamentary Inquiry into University Governance. This is widespread.

Shocking revelations at #SenateEstimates last night as Senator Tony Sheldon reveals that #ANU Chancellor Julie Bishop has apparently been opening ANU's piggy bank for her business partner, as ANU continues to sack staff. 🐖 @nteunion.bsky.social Vote of No Confidence: votenoANU.nteu.au

If #AcademicDOGE isn't the most perfect way to describe the mindless hacking and slashing going at #ANU as part of Renew ANU, I don't know what is. *Chef's kiss* 😚🤌

Seems to be a pretty compelling case for a Vote of No Confidence to me... More information at votenoanu.nteu.au. ✊

Forced redundancies should always be a last resort. Congratulations @nteunion.bsky.social members at #ANU on winning a pathway for those who want to go to go, and making it easier for those who want to stay to stay.

In an ideal world, a Vote of No Confidence at the Australian National University would not be necessary. But as @nteunion.bsky.social members at the university will tell you, #ANU is far from an ideal world at the moment.

Well done to the students who organised this event - inspiring to see student solidarity with #ANU staff. Rally in Kambri - Wed Feb 26, 12pm. ✊

Staff and students standing together against cuts at ANU. Sacking 638FTE, tutorials every second week and more students per class degrades the quality of education @ourANU. See VoteNOanu.nteu.au for more info.

Union members winning to make a rubbish process at least a little bit better at #ANU. This means that it will be easier for those who want to go to go, and those who want to stay, to stay.

A Dutton Government would be bad for workers, education, health, public services, the environment... the list goes on. Great to be out in Belconnen this morning. #DontRiskDutton ☢️ @australianunions.bsky.social @nteunion.bsky.social

We'll be rallying as voting opens on 26 February for the #ANU Vote of No Confidence. ✊ The day after, @nteunion.bsky.social will be hosting a Watch Party as ANU appear before Senate Estimates. 🍿🍿🍿

Meanwhile at ANU, the highly-paid consultants at Nous have left their plans for a big restructure lying around in the lunchroom

We're expecting hundreds of job losses at #ANU this year - not that they'll tell you about it. The culture of secrecy about the livelihoods of staff is yet another reason for @nteunion.bsky.social Vote of No Confidence. See our presentation (register via Zoom): bit.ly/NoConfidence...

Looking forward to contributing from an @nteunion.bsky.social perspective on what's going wrong in higher education. Well done to @greens.org.au for hosting on this important issue. It'll be great to catch up with @mehreenfaruqi.bsky.social and Isabel Mudford.

Nobody likes job losses. But the @nteunion.bsky.social has managed to win a reprieve for staff in 'spill and fill' processes, and a slight reduction in the number of people to go. All possible through the actions of union members. ✊

Whether it's #ANU or #UOW - if you're getting more than $1 million a year to run a public university, the *very least* we should expect is your undivided attention.

It's on! The Vote of No Confidence in the #ANU Chancellor & Vice-Chancellor will take place from 26 February to 26 March. If you'll be away - or if you've simply heard and seen enough to make your decision - feel free to vote early at votenoanu.nteu.au ✊

I love it when university staff decide not just to lament the damage being done to their university, but instead decide to stand together and do something about it. See you tomorrow!

According to @timeshighered.bsky.social, the 2025 world ranking for #ANU has dropped from 49th to 73rd since 2019 (down from 67th last year). This includes a drop in the rating given to teaching. I can't imagine bigger classes & abolishing the Centre for Learning & Teaching will help...

The VC counter-offensive has begun. Now that a Parliamentary Inquiry will shine a light on shoddy university governance & issues like VC salaries, the man who was once Australia's highest-paid VC reckons universities should just be left alone... @nteunion.bsky.social www.afr.com/work-and-car...

Today’s Australian Financial Review article by Julie Hare features a discussion about my blog post about plastic goldfish www.afr.com/policy/healt...

There is undoubtedly value in higher education, which goes beyond financial benefit & employability, and extends to students developing their full personhood. But universities are being let down by VCs stripping millions out & running them into the ground. www.afr.com/policy/healt...

“There’s no other job in Australia where you can be paid so exorbitantly while performing so badly, with seemingly no consequences or accountability for the impact on university staff and students.” - Senator Tony Sheldon 👏👏👏👏✊

Let us never forget that poor governance & financial mismanagement have brought about the #UniCanberra crisis. Having caused the current financial situation, they can at least manage it without unnecessary risk to health and safety.

We need a Parliamentary Inquiry into University Governance. The #ANU example has shown that universities are unwilling or unable to do what is necessary themselves. Join @nteunion.bsky.social at www.nteu.au/join.

Course cuts and job cuts are typical symptoms of poor governance.

There comes a point when it doesn't matter what they say, nobody believes them anymore. At #ANU, we reached that point some time ago. Only @nteunion.bsky.social stands up for better university governance. Join today at www.nteu.au/join. ✊

"This blatant entitlement is just another symptom of the catastrophic failures of the corporate university model that’s rotting the sector from the inside.” - Senator @mehreenfaruqi.bsky.social Time for a Parliamentary Inquiry into University Governance. @nteunion.bsky.social

The root cause of #UniCanberra problems is poor governance. Poor governance leads to financial stress, which leads to course cuts & job cuts. @nteunion.bsky.social is fixing university governance to stop this happening again - at UC or anywhere else.

We need a Federal Parliamentary Inquiry into University Governance.

“It is clear that we need to strengthen governance arrangements at our universities and that’s what we’re doing,” Jason Clare said. When will we know more about the governance inquiry, specifically the composition of the committee? www.smh.com.au/national/hig...

Trim the top, not the talent.

Julie Bishop has been Chancellor at #ANU since January 2020. As Chair of ANU Council, this is the primary role for oversight within the university. If the ANU's financial position is as bad as they say it is, Bishop must be held accountable.

In The Canberra Times this morning, many of the issues at #ANU and #UniCanberra have been laid bare. Only @nteunion.bsky.social has been pushing for the governance reform the higher education sector needs. Join your union today at www.nteu.au/join. ✊

“In my view it is quite inappropriate for a vice chancellor to hold an additional remunerated position. It raises issues of conflict of interest, as well as time and capacity.” - Professor Hilary Winchester, university governance expert.

This. Universities are using the international student cap as a distraction from internal problems of governance and, to use what is probably now regarded as a quaint, old-fashioned idea, fairness.

This is good, but... The problems with international student caps can't be allowed to mask the broader problems universities face. Current issues at #ANU and #UniCanberra have been the fault of financial mismanagement & poor governance.

So it appears that #ANU Council wasn't aware, because Julie Bishop had looked into it herself "on behalf of Council." Well I'm satisfied... 🤦‍♂️ Julie Bishop has decided to tie herself to the mast and go down with the ship. She must go too.

In any functioning organisation, the Board (equivalent) not being told that the CEO (equivalent) had a second job would be fatal to the CEOs position and that of a Chair (equivalent) who did know. www.afr.com/work-and-car...

Is there anyone left who thinks that the #ANU Vice-Chancellor's position *is* tenable? Every day without decisive action from ANU Council damages the University.

This is becoming untenable by the day. It beggars belief that a vice-chancellor is pocketing a salary of over $1 million a year while also holding another paid position.

"O, what a tangled web we weave, When first we practise to deceive!" #ANU have been caught out lying in defence of embattled Vice-Chancellor. We stand for honest governance. Join @nteunion.bsky.social today at www.nteu.au/join.

It's not just the job cuts & trying to take away a pay rise at #ANU that concern the @nteunion.bsky.social. It's childcare closures, parking hikes, a culture of fear, governance issues, financial mismanagement, and the Vice-Chancellor's second job at Intel.

We've written to @jasonclaremp.bsky.social because we have significant concerns, including over the VC's second job with Intel. How can a VC dedicate themselves fully to the job if they're also working for an overseas multinational? And what conflicts emerge? Intel is a major US defence contractor.

The 52 academic job losses proposed bring the total at #UniCanberra to 193 - but far more staff will be affected because of the way this is being implemented. Snap @nteunion.bsky.social meeting today, online at 12.30pm: https://buff.ly/41JyiOm

'Spill and fill' processes create a 'hunger games' environment, undermining collegiality and leaving staff to fight it out against their colleagues. Yesterday #UniCanberra proposed that 97 academics be forced to fight it out for 64 remaining positions. Merry Christmas. 🎄🎅
