Not just deserve. Weather monitoring, disease management, and food safety are services we pay for from the government that are being stolen from us.

Please enjoy my last ever post at Climate.gov/ENSO Blog. This afternoon I was fired by the Trump Administration 15 days before my 2yr probationary period ended on March 13. I have worked at NOAA since 2010, and I'm so incredibly proud of the work I did. If anyone wants a quote, let me know.

I am now hearing from multiple folks in the past two hours (including some who have personally been fired) that mass firings have now commenced within NOAA--including, yes, at the National Weather Service.

Unbelievable news. Pancreatic is one of the deadliest cancers. New paper shows personalized mRNA vaccines can induce durable T cells that attack pancreatic cancer, with 75% of patients cancer free at three years—far, far better than standard of care. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

I think about this map a lot. www.bloomberg.com/graphics/201...

I think that it's important to share examples of visible dissent. Normalcy bias is real. Sharing how people continue to dissent is helpful.

I had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day and then when I got home I checked my email and was greeted by presales for rilo kiley in new haven and elbow in boston and everything is perfect and nothing hurts 🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹😍😍😍😍😍😍

legitimately devastated. I don’t like buying fabric online and not being able to feel it and I deeply hate downloadable patterns which require so much scaling work to print and then need to be taped together and fold in all the wrong places. this sucks.

in the lab I study very specific behaviors of a very specific organism but with my camera I prefer to capture natural behaviors of whoever my feet/kayak/zoom lens give me access to

David wants you to listen to this interview with @edyong209.bsky.social.

ventured off onto the ice, potentially not returning

A friend just sent me this and I NEED to know what these bugs will be for www.mykelly.com/job/9701862-... "The Lead Research Scientist will ... create gigantic insects using high oxygen environments and genetic modification techniques such as CRISPR." BUT WHY

I believe the urge I'm feeling is what @erinbiba.bsky.social referred to as the Jewish epigenetic instinct to flee to another country...

I am spending my time in a totally normal manner this winter

I can’t remember where I read this, but it’s important: Why is it that when people think about traveling to the past, they worry about doing something small that will drastically change the present, but no one in the present thinks that doing something small today can drastically change the future?

Not surprised that it's community colleges that are fighting back. Community colleges serve the greatest number of people facing systemic barriers. A large percentage of community college students are the first in their family to attend college.

So one of the things that I think is lost on AI proponents is what I call the card catalog effect, a thing I shouldn’t call it because a lot of people probably have no experience with a card catalog.

*2025 voice* actually, John Brown would have been more effective if he started a substack

I feel like I'm going insane every time I see a media story about DOGE that doesn't also mention the fact that the Government Accountability Office exists and performs the exact function that DOGE pretends to, only in a credibly constitutional, non-partisan, and conflict-of-interest-free manner

One of the questions after my talk today was about scientists refusing to buck the administration because they fear losing their jobs. I said that a lot of self-styled apolitical scientists lost their jobs this week, so silence will not save them. Respond and keep your values and dignity.

Brief overview of the catastrophic impact this administration’s layoffs are having on Tribal Nations —to tribal colleges, tribal public health programs, and tribal fire fighting, all which are being amplified with mass layoffs of federal employees the last few days ictnews.org/news/life-or...

I mis-added earlier, here's corrected post: How many scientists and interior workers were fired today? Between news article estimates and social posts, I count over 10k: 5200 @ NIH 1200-2000 @ DOE 800 @ USDA 2,300 @ Dept. of Interior 1,300 @ CDC (I haven't heard any FDA, EPA, or NASA numbers)

This is where you go to tell the National Park Service to restore the word "transgender" in its entry on the Stonewall monument. (Scroll down.)

Army guidance on implementing President Trump's order on transgender troops, filed in court today, says to NOT take adverse personnel action against people based on gender identity "at this time" and to continue medical treatment. for gender dysphoria. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

for sale: checks & balances, never used

I get Democrats are doing the public relations battle to win the narrative for our constitution but I think it would be much more compelling for the American people to see Nancy Pelosi and Bernie Sanders shoved into a paddy wagon for trespassing ata federal agency

JUST IN: A federal judge in Massachusetts has blocked the Trump administration's rate change to NIH grants. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Yes. “People are doing things. You will meet them when YOU start doing things.” Lots of information and resources in this one. open.substack.com/pub/sherrily...

this haptic display absolutely rocks. basketball is for everyone.

At the Deathbed, by Edvard Munch, 1895

this game and the halftime show have been so cathartic. it’s like the eagles have been possessed by the spirit of the good side of America (and kendrick has long been possessed by the spirit of hating for a good cause)

Snoop and Tom Brady: say no to hate Kendrick: actually

Serena Williams!

Kendrick brought America together the way that "Country Roads" ad was supposed to.

Don’t just say DEI as if it’s a bad word. Spell it out. Say diversity, which is the lifeblood of American society & culture & innovation. Say equity, which a just society should pursue. Say inclusion, because decent people believe in increasing belonging, not isolating people who are different.

so close yet so far. when it’s finally done I’ll write up the whole nightmare that led to this unplanned (other than the cabinets) renovation but for now I just want to have the progress somewhere easy to see side-by-side for when I’m feeling despairing about what’s left

This should be a reminder to universities that canceling your initiatives aimed at minorities, asking your faculty and students to curb research on "divisive" topics, and shuttering your gender studies programs won't stop this administration from attacking you. Stick up for academic independence.
