So tragically true, and also: absolutely 💯 brilliant A+ sentence! 👏 👏 👏

I’m not in the classroom anymore so I’ve lost touch with that community. As I said, I would use their excellent, free curriculum but not bring students onto the website. It’s totally unnecessary.

It looks like they made significant changes to address those issues. When I had my students write novels, we used the NaNoWriMo curriculum, but spent very little time on the site. It's certainly possible to use their resources but not have students on the site at all. howtobe247.com/nanowrimo-to...

Great tip! The teachers on that committee are going to appreciate a candidate who is prepared to support them with a solid discipline plan.

OK, to split a few more hairs... If participation is the assignment, is it actually assessed? Like, how well someone participated? That sounds like a grade for effort, which gets dicey - do we really know how much effort they put forth? Or is participation in P.E. kind of a yes/no grade?

If the assignment is to contribute to a class discussion, then the assignment is to speak (not “participate”). We need to be really clear to students what is assigned and how they will be graded. To just say “you need to participate” doesn’t make clear what is expected. 3/3

Also - If we say they have to participate in classes like P.E., band, etc., then I don't think we're talking about participation. Doing P.E. work or playing an instrument is the literal assignment, so of course that should be graded, just like writing in English is the assignment to be graded. 2/3

I’ve never been comfortable with participation grades. Can I truly assess the variety of ways students might participate? It hasn’t felt do-able nor accurate and fair for me. Are they doing the work? Are they demonstrating learning on assignments and assessments? Then they are participating. 1/3

I’m so sorry, Chanea. You are doing such important, powerful work. But you need to take care of yourself. I’m so sorry. 💕

I feel your pain & often considered leaving - it is so damn hard. But that side benefit is a big one. When the future is sitting right in front of you, every day, it's a little easier to focus on how we can impact it instead of dwelling on the world burning down around us. Hang in there!

I was so confused! Not Marcia Gay Harden; not Marcia Gay Hamilton -- I think you mean LisaGay Hamilton. 😂

I’m pretty sure they claimed “price of eggs” to cover their racism and misogyny. No middle ground.

It’s been a long haul! My first year was 1988… when final drafts were typed on a typewriter and we put together the yearbook by physically cropping the photos and arranging pages by hand. Grateful for the journey. But look at you, starting the glorious journey of raising a tiny human! So so fun. 💕
