As Haiti’s transitional authorities seek to chart a realistic path to safe elections and constitutional reform, they should ensure that violence's effects on women are recognised, the expertise of civil society leaders harnessed, and women can take up decision-making roles. (4/4)

Women's experiences and expertise need to factor into the transition. Yet the 9-member Transitional Presidential Council includes only 1 woman - who does not hold voting power. Other new institutions likewise fall (far) short of the 30% quota in the 2012 constitution. (3/4)

Longstanding gender inequality, escalating violence & gang control over populations have combined to make life incredibly difficult for Haitian women and girls. Women-led organisations provide crucial support to survivors of sexual violence & advocate for their rights. (2/4)
