When I was in France in 2003, I always just said I was from New York. Probably worked better than the Canada thing - and plus they'd probably expect some level of French higher than what I had.

Cycling used to be a working class sport, so maybe there's still residual culture in the sport

depends what you're looking for. Whidbey is a lot more accessible and still very nice. Short ferry ride though (if that's a part of the appeal). Bainbridge Island is a great ferry ride and it leaves from downtown Seattle but it's more of a day trip than a two day getaway.

I see a lot of people writing the San Juan Islands - while they are beautiful and worth the trip, a huge warning: booking the ferry is a nightmare - right up there with signing up for swim lessons or summer camps.

probably not worth arguing with someone like that but in English, there are a whole slew of ethnonyms that are considered antiquated, rude, or offensive

But what about the people watching him give a speech, don't they have jobs? Or are they paid to be there?

Definitely the Mercy Watson/Deckawoo Drive books. But sometimes I think I like them more than my kid does. We also just started reading the Dragon Masters series. it's not too far on the "Loser Ninja" side of things.

Also every royal family in history had major anxiety about producing heirs because it was very much not a sure thing.

Every family tree has lots of childless couples. I'll never know for sure why some of my great-grandparents' siblings and their spouses didn't have kids - maybe it was by choice for some of them - but I'd bet money many of them would have if they could have.

It's definitely a weird little terminal. If you take a morning flight on Alaska, it's a joy. Short lines for security, a decent Dunkin Donuts, and plenty of seating. It's quite the opposite in the afternoons and evenings when all the European flights depart.

I think crime may be going down overall but a lot of petty property crime gets underreported. lots of people might walk past the same car with a smashed windshield in their neighborhood and conclude to themselves that there's a lot of crime
