I’ve been sort of idly keeping track of all the points in the Declaration of Independence’s bill of particulars that arguably apply to the Trump Admin. This is the first four-in-a-row I’ve hit. www.archives.gov/founding-doc...

We do not have a free country in this moment. When they can nab someone off the street because they don't like what they say, they can nab anyone.

The SAVE Act may as well be called the anti-voting rights act. Here’s why:

The State Department has said they have revoked visas of more than 300 students. They have been terrorizing hundreds and aim to terrorize hundreds, if not thousands more.

"I had not touched a cat in 15 yrs when an orange kitten wandered over to sit w/me in the grass one day. I was left without adequate words to describe that experience. It reminded me that I am alive. It instilled in me a raw, unbridled happiness that I had never felt before, not even as a child."

If you're scooping up students off the street for writing op-eds, you're secret police, and should be treated accordingly.

Conan O’Brien’s acceptance speech for his Mark Twain honour is a really good example of funny does serious youtu.be/Yr8qPKTo8yA

Unidentified men grabbing someone off the street and putting her in a car because she wrote an op-Ed. This as flatly authoritarian as anything we’ve seen in this country in a very long time.

This is completely terrifying, a huge violation of the first amendment, and part of the coopting of a distorted version of anti-semitism to justify persecution of people speaking out against Israel's genocide. And the broader pursuit of a police state.

Umm, so many snarky answers I could give here. But ultimately, at least from a marketing perspective, it's because we want the book to do well. Whether that's because the original title might cause metadata/discoverability issues, is too broad or vague, too jargonay, too long, etc.

If you accept that non-citizens have no right to due process, you are accepting that citizens have no right to due process. All the government has to do is claim that you are not a citizen; without due process you have no chance to prove the contrary.

"To be honest, the future of book media is bleak." 😢Depressing but informative conversation with a great collection of reviewers and book editors.

This is wild. And scary.

The president is asserting an unreviewable power to seize any person off the street and ship him to a dungeon abroad. Nobody can say this is an overreaction or alarmism or "TDS" when this is literally what the administration is doing right now.

This story was so upsetting. I am not sure what religion these pastors belong to, but it certainly isn't Christianity. Jesus was the ultimate empath. www.npr.org/2025/03/22/n...

This has been a hard loss. Jonathan was a favorite author. I'm proud to have worked with him on three books.

Great thread.

Worth reading the entire thing.

Germany updates US travel advice after citizens detained

"Mobilize your alumni networks. Enlist families whose children’s lives have been saved in your hospitals; reach out to companies that have commercialized your research, make contact with universities in red and blue states, public and private, who face the same threat. Do it fast." Important read:

If you live in NC, please write our senators and your representative and ask them to demand that the USDA restore this crucial funding to our state's food banks. www.wunc.org/news/2025-03...

Funny how "erasing history" only applies to tearing down Confederate monuments, emphasizing the role of enslavement in the development of the U.S., & renaming military bases named after Confederates, but not to acknowledging historical Black, Brown, queer, and trans folks

Every @dukepress.bsky.social book I randomly looked up was in there. We certainly didn't authorize that.

Again, I do not think it is safe to visit the US anymore. Doctors, scientists, students, tourists, all have been targeted. Int'l organizations should not hold conferences here for the next 4 years.

A new analysis reveals that Trump’s tax plan will “actively transfer money from low-income people to the top 0.1% of income earners.” 🔗: www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

America’s superrich have always found ways to avoid paying taxes, but in recent years, they’ve discovered what might be the mother of all loopholes, Rogé Karma writes: a three-step process called “Buy, Borrow, Die.” Read more: theatln.tc/rGCx0Vk5

In case you, like me, are a high-anxiety human who missed this piece of moderately reassuring news: Despite many broken things, the FDA *did* make a flu shot recommendation for this fall. www.cnn.com/2025/03/13/h...

The INDY is covering local layoffs and furloughs as a result of federal funding cuts. If you or someone you know has been affected, we’d like to hear from you. Send us an email at [email protected].

RIP to a great craftsman. I loved going into the Thos. Moser store in Freeport, ME and just running my hands over the beautiful wood furniture, each a work of art. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/17/a...

1. EXCLUSIVE An internal Social Security Administration memo, dated March 13 and obtained by Popular Information, lays out a plan to sabotage the agency. The memo itself predicts "service disruption," "operational strain," and "budget shortfalls" will result. Follow this thread for details. 🧵

This elderly man showed up to support an anti-trans bill in my home state and then, because he had to wait hours to testify, he was stuck listening to queer folks rally against it By the time it was his turn to speak, he'd changed his mind Never doubt that speaking out can change hearts and minds

I had never heard of this book, but now I want to read it. I just requested it from my library. I am number 59 in line, so Meta's quashing effort is going super well, lol.

It does not seem safe to visit the US anymore. I don't know why anyone would come here who doesn't have to. www.bbc.com/news/article...

Republicans control every part of the federal government. They’re unpopular people who have been doing unpopular things — if you can’t make the obvious case that any shutdown is yet another misstep of their own making, you should get the hell out of politics

"the plan to shrink IRS staff by up to 50% would — very conservatively — lead to a $400 billion increase in uncollected taxes over the next decade. It could easily mean more than $2 trillion in losses..." www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

A rough week at DUP, the second obituary I've had to write in two days. Having trouble concentrating between this and the news and ominous emails from the administration.

Michel Martin, my friends.

JFC. I am so mad right now.

Oh no! Jonathan is a lovely person, a great writer and thinker. I've loved working with him over the past years.
