There are at least a half dozen squirrels we see daily in the oak trees across the parking lot. There are a few grey, five or so black. Today, two of the black squirrels have been running up and down the trunk of the largest oaks, mouths full of leaves, stuffing them into a hole.

Yesterday morning, a few beautiful minutes on shore before work. The deep cold kept last week’s snowfall fresh, and refroze the long ice shelf that ripples along the shore as far as the eye can see. I missed the early pink light, caught the golden orange of the risen sun hiding behind low clouds.

We’re still buried under that enormous dump of snow from last week, but the earlier sunrise and cardinals singing their laser gun call (pew pew pew!) definitely sounds like a hint of spring. A year ago, the blackbirds and grackles were here by Feb. 28. This year? I think it’ll be a while…
