Aerith's death is pretty much critical to the storyline, and Cloud's character development. So I don't see it happening. But I think in Zack's story Aerith might live, but Cloud dies.

I honestly believe it has a lot to do with the characters. Not only are these characters rich in nostalgia, they are dynamic and deep. You want to know how they work together, and how their individual and combined stories unfold. None of them are 2 dimensional.
but maybe that's just me.
