How did I only just discover that the entire Codex Laureshamensis is available online? There goes the rest of the afternoon/early evening... #charterrific www.archivum-laureshamense-digital.de/de/index.html

The entire (!) Ancient History branch of Cardiff University is threatened to be axed. There are very dear colleagues working there. They do outstanding work. Please consider signing and sharing this petition to save them.

Looking forward to venture further into the 11th century and to present my new project at this year's @imc-leeds.bsky.social as part of the session 1742 on Thursday. @hcaatedinburgh.bsky.social #MedievalSky

An in-depth & very interesting thread (in French) on the use of the term 'tribe' to describe premodern (in this case: nomadic) societies & its historiographical pitfalls... quite relevant to scholars of late antique/earl medieval 'gentes' too! #MedievalSky

My favourite musical discovery of the past year. Beautiful, deeply melancholic folk with shades of Doom metal.

I was happy to present my new project on violence in the Salian realm in the 11th century @landgesch.bsky.social yesterday. More to follow @imc-leeds.bsky.social, hopefully!

My review of Beat Näf & Charles Kraemer, 'Eremit im frühen Mittelalter. Amatus von Grenoble, Saint-Maurice d’Agaune, Luxeuil und Remiremont (ca. 570–ca. 629)' (2022) is now published in the latest issue of Le Moyen Âge. Merci à @nruffini.bsky.social pour la traduction ! #MedievalSky

As the holidays are around the corner, I wanted to use the opportunity to mention those scholars on Bluesky whose work I have so far used or cited in my undergraduate seminar on 'The development of Christianity between the Rhine and Lake Constance in the early Middle Ages'. #MedievalSky

141 late Roman coins discovered in northern Luxembourg, incl. 3 of Eugenius (d. 394). Analysis by the INRA still ongoing: www.rtl.lu/news/nationa...

Christmas came early! Actually, one of these is a Christmas present, so I have to wait a month before I officially receive it. But the other is straight to the top of the pile!

Proofs for an upcoming article in a volume on early medieval mobility edited by @laurysarti.bsky.social. Grateful to @sihonglin.bsky.social for his comments and corrections. #MedievalSky

By my beard! There's a Luxembourgish translation of 'The #Hobbit' which I only found about this week. And quite a lovely edition (incl. the drawings of #Tolkien) too!

I had the huge pleasure of presenting my book on Willibrord in Echternach in pres. of the mayor & the 🇮🇪 & 🇬🇧 ambassadors to 🇱🇺 - w. the supp. of the Irish Embassy & the Willibrordus-BV, we were able to invite Dáibhí Ó Cróinín for a great discussion on Ireland, Britain & the Continent in the 7/8th c.

I should be used to seeing manuscripts as old as these, but still 💚

Today, I had the chance to visit the National Library of Luxembourg together w. Dáibhí Ó Cróinín & HE Ambassador Jean McDonald. We were shown some of the oldest fragments in their collection, incl. one of Gregory's Dialogues & the Hisperica Famina, both of 7th-c. date & kept at Echternach. 1/2

'Willibrord between Ireland, Britain and Merovingian Francia (690–739). Beyond Mission' has been out for a month now. Very grateful for the support and the encouraging feedback I've received so far from friends & colleagues. www.liverpooluniversitypress.co.uk/doi/book/10....

When you're in a small field, you're always looking over your shoulder to see if budget cuts are trying to overtake you. Today, it overtook @celticuu.bsky.social together with French, German, Italian, Arabic and Religion. Please sign, and keep an eye on our socials for the inevitable campaign

This is serious stuff. You may have seen the carnage in Leiden, now we learned that Utrecht is planning to ax (amongst others) Religion Studies, French, German, Italian, Arabic, and Celtic. Basically for being too "small" for a university that's being run like a factory. So please sign this 👇

Looking forward to teaching my undergraduate seminar 'The development of Christianity between the Rhine and Lake Constance in the early Middle Ages' this semester. And, of course, I always have vol. 4 of the wonderful 'Histoire dessinée de la France' series by B. Dumézil & H. Micol at hand.

It was a great honour and pleasure to be able to launch my book on Willibrord at the Luxembourg Residence in Dublin yesterday at the invitation of the ambassador, HE Florence Ensch. I was especially delighted to see so many former colleagues and friends from the Irish medievalist community again.
