The Jewish Food Festival and Treasure Market in Montgomery, my friends, is a whole scene. While working the collectibles room, I saw: 1. A former Alabama Chief Justice (not the IVF one) 2. The co-founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center 3. Every gay couple in Montgomery 4. So many Methodists

DOGE isn't saving us money. DOGE is forcing us to DIY society--to manage all the costs, risks, and problems that government is best poised to solve.

Wow! What a great cover!

Dear Manager, I have: 1. Raised the curtain 2. Lit the lights 3. Put on makeup 4. Dressed up right 5. Met the Muppets at the Muppet Show tonight

As promised, here are the slides I shared with students to convince them to NOT use chatGPT and other artificial stupidity. TL;DR? AI is evil, unsustainable and stupid, and I'd much rather they use their own brains, make their own mistakes, and actually learn something. 🪄

I suppose there have always been voices that preferred regression, but as whole, though sometimes kicking and screaming, the US has always moved toward progress. So much we're now seeing is unprecedented. It leaves me delirious.

lmfao excuse me

Dear manager, 1. I walked through this wicked world 2. Searching for light in the darkness of insanity 3. Asked myself, Is all hope lost? Is there only pain, hatred & misery? 4. Each time I feel like this inside, there’s one thing I want to know 5. What’s so funny about peace love & understanding?

The party of “you are on your own”

A lot of people who’ve posted that “I don’t know how to explain that you should care about other people” quote need to know that they should care about other people. I want my tax dollars to go to paying for insulin for the most vile MAGA asshole you ever heard of; that’s part of “everyone”.

Has a society ever looked at all its progress, all its better angels, all the ways it has (even if imperfectly and unevenly) tried to get better and all the evidence that progress is possible — and just said “nah” before?

Dear manager, this week I 1) Woke up, fell out of bed 2) Dragged a comb across my head 3) Found my way downstairs and drank a cup 4) And looking up, I noticed I was late 5) Found my coat and grabbed my hat

By accepting Trump’s anti-Black premise and regurgitating the narrative that equates anything Black as DEI, the NY Times has become part of the propaganda machine

The major American Jewish organizations have gone so hard for, “Anti-Zionism is the major form antisemitism takes today” that they are wholly unprepared for a world where MAGA antisemitism will often come in the form of exaggerated support for Zionism.

The next step in trying to dismantle Infectious Diseases research - dismantle @niaidnews.bsky.social - should surprise no one that this a R-led proposal. An unmitigated disaster for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of pathogens that affect everyone in the US www.congress.gov/bill/119th-c...

Between this and the fact that the Democrat who represents me at the state house of representatives says Jews in Hollywood are conspiring to emasculate Black men, it’s a hell of a time to be a not-supportive-of-Israel Jew in Alabama 😅

NEW Here is the full email that Musk/OPM is sending to 2 million federal employees. Subject line: What did you do last week? Musk claimed on X that failure to reply would be considered a resignation, but that is not mentioned in the email.

I absolutely love that all of this is happening and the concluding note to all of pretty much all of it is almost always “it is unclear what legal authority, if any, X person is relying on.” Just feels great, man.

All of the people cheering on Luigi and saying that he did nothing wrong when he executed a premeditated murder make me really uncomfortable. Once you say that he’s justified, I can’t trust that you aren’t going to say political violence against more people is justified, and that’s a real bad path.

I try hard to explain that antisemitism is not just hatred of Jews, but often a particular belief about internationalism and cross-border mobility as a threat to the stability of the nation-state, which can now be deployed by Israel as much as any other nation-state, and... he just went and said it.

I transcribed remarks from Steve Bannon at CPAC, about Jews and Israel. Video attached. It's a master class in how the far-right spreads blatant antisemitism, but disguise it by including Israeli Jews within the category of those threatened by perfidious rootless Jewish billionaires.

So many of the tropes of classic antisemitism are about the Jew as rootless internationalist, the threat to the stability of the nation-state. If you're a strong Jewish nationalist, it can be easy to recapitulate those tropes, and actual antisemitism is presented as the solution to antisemitism.

Translation: We gave you your own ethno state Don't ask for rights in ours

“I do this work because the kids in the Black Belt, some who don’t have running water at home, their hope is in education. I do this for the kids who reside at Children’s Hospital...They still have a right to an education because education is the hope for a better future.” www.al.com/educationlab...

Are you there God? What the fuck, man?

I’m reading Dune and I’m almost done. The other Dune books — do they go in a particular order? What am I supposed to read next?

This AM I have re-posted stories from WaPo, the NYT and NPR. The NYT story has multiple bylines and is a thorough factual debunking of an official government communication. You can argue about headlines and stay mad about past errors or you can realize institutional journalists are doing the work.

Trump felt like such a uniquely awful person to be dominating politics for four straight years that it never occurred to me that someone different and substantially worse could dominate politics during his second term. AND YET ballsandstrikes.substack.com/p/you-will-n...

let me say that this is the classic “just asking questions” approach to delegitimizing the achievements of black people. and critically, you don’t even have to be a black person who talks about race. simply being black to these people means you are “obsessed with race.”

My column from Monday. In their endless quest to hurt transgender Alabamians, Gov. Kay Ivey and the Alabama Legislature have given local governments and schools sweeping powers to separate men and women in the name of “safety” and “fairness.” That’s certain to hurt Alabama women.

if you look at a bad thing that happened and assume, evidence-free, that it's because a Black person got a job they shouldn't have, you're not a "DEI skeptic," you're a dumb gutter racist

Pay attention to this. Replacing JAGs with loyalists enables whatever orders Trump and Hegseth issue to be interpreted as lawful.

Mr. Hegseth has previously said that General Brown should be fired because of his “woke” focus on diversity, equity and inclusion programs in the military. Replaces a Black four-star fighter pilot with a white man who does not meet the statutory qualifications supposedly over DEI.

BREAKING — States attorneys general lead by @newyorkstateag.bsky.social were just granted a preliminary injunction in their case against DOGE. The team cannot access Treasury Department payment systems or data while the lawsuit proceeds. Major.

This is how it’s done.

I've seen quite a few people assume this involves Republicans or MAGA. It doesn't. The mayor of the city that sued to have the newspaper editorial censored is a Democrat. And the judge has no known ties to the Republican Party.

I don’t see him on here anymore, but Brandon Taylor’s latest musings on life, the world, and language usage are as thoughtful and interesting as ever. Recommended. blgtylr.substack.com/p/be-so-seri...

I was informed today that my college got a notification from the federal government that they must cancel the education they do about biases and bigotries for all incoming freshmen during orientation - with the exception of antisemitism education, which is apparently still allowed.
