Ok, I lived this nightmare sometime in the early 2000s. You go to another computer and write down the sequence of key presses (lots of tabs and arrow keys are involved) to open the Control Panel, Displays, going down the resolution list, selecting, then return for OK.

Good to have a "kill switch" if you rely on VPN connections for security or privacy. Tricky to troubleshoot those tunnels too.

Honestly, I wouldn't be too comfortable without someone there, live, in the room with the sub and monitoring even if the sub is unaware. If it's not me, then it needs to be someone else sober and trustworthy.
When hands are exposed and visible, I use a hand signal for distress.
