Wonderful bit of British euphemism. NHS HR write to my retired nurse mum in law shortly after her 90th birthday requiring her to "confirm she is still entitled to her pension". So, so tempting to quote Granny Weatherwax in her reply ... @rhi.bsky.social @terrypratchett.bsky.social

I mean .. it's an improvement, but still so so bleak for a main city gateway #Bradford www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Dear BBC News please get someone .. anyone .. to check your online output before publishing it live to 7, 894 people. I know things are messed up in the US at the moment but I don't think even Trump sends diplomatic envoys to his own capital city.

Cardiff University has settled the BBC bias argument once and for all uk.themedialeader.com/cardiff-univ...

Just had an email from Picturehouse Cinemas about their updated privacy and cookie policy. You're no longer allowed to crunch them during the quiet bits

Who'd a thunk it, eh? www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

So .. Paul McCartney or Mark Zuckerberg? I know who I'd rather have setting the rules for the future of music, art and creative writing www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Looking forward to crossing The Yorkshire Sea next time I go to Rotterdam from Hull ....

Forget journalistic neutrality.. I'm bloody furious about this cultural vandalism planned by Leeds City Council to save pennies in the big picture of their financial plight www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Disgraceful. Both the proposal to close a much loved cultural facility and (especially) the way it's been handled. Staff should never learn their jobs are a risk from social media.

Good call. Now to make them comply with libel, contempt, children's act and the rest like any other publisher. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Hey @bradford2025.co.uk who could have guessed the Wallace and Gromit live brass band soundtrack event would sell out in Saltaire after the Feathers McGraw mania over Christmas? So after the success of RISE you're going to score another PR triumph by announcing a second date - aren't you? #Bradford

And the tax return is in, lads. I think 21 days early is a personal best.

When journalists take the time to explain ... it signals respect for the intelligence and curiosity of their audience (I've been saying this for years! but was told people can't listen for more than four minutes so I have to stop and "... here's Kylie" 🙄) www.niemanlab.org/2024/12/the-...

The Daily Star showing the supposedly more serious newspapers how best to report on Elon Musk.

The sales managers finally get what they wanted back in 1973.

Who is this Alan Musk anyway?

Interesting historical perspective on current media woes ..

I don't understand the political timidity when it comes to regulating social media. These are companies that have decimated the free press, fuelled race riots on our streets, undermined the mental health of our children, paid little tax and are now undermining liberal democracy itself.

This used to be literally my next door neighbour ...

Journalists really don’t have to go along with the agenda of social media - and definitely not with the interventions of billionaires. This talk from the end of 2024 feels particularly relevant today. www.commonwealthroundtable.co.uk/general/medi...

Right, all you Bing Crosby fans ... happy now?

This .. and social media more generally. If a 'sleb has tweeted something controversial the default should be to contact them for further comment rather than reading out the ravings from an iPad.

One for @james.crid.land to consider for his newsletter ...

Learning the hard way that we need to *seriously* cut back our Christmas food buying routine when the family are staying with their other family for the festivities. TL:DR It's not just about the turkey 🦃

Eleven chocolates in a box. ELEVEN. Who (apart from some demented public health bureaucrat with no mates who spots a way of forcing an 8% reduction in calorific intake for the lower orders in league with a greedy billionaire confectionery magnate) puts ELEVEN chocolates in a box ?

If your business model doesn’t work without breaking the law, Sam, then you’re not in business. You’re in organized crime. futurism.com/the-byte/ope...

Back in #Sheffield for a couple of days with the postgrad journalists at the Uni and I do love the Christmas displays on the Children's Hospital - obviously held in deep affection.

“Just under half of Britain’s very highest paying jobs were located in London 30 years ago. Today that figure is almost 75 per cent.” Remarkable stat from @jburnmurdoch.bsky.social in this excellent column on our unbalanced economy. www.ft.com/content/eb02...

Day three of "no snacks 'til Christmas*" and mi stomach thinks mi throat's cut. (* at home. If you're inviting me out, no Twiglets barred)

This CD player was my birthday present in 1997 along with the incomparable Fresh Hits 1997. I found it recently and COULD NOT BELIEVE how rich the sound was, after years of streaming Spotify on my phone. My column today is about this phenomenon, which I’m calling “qualitynesia” on.ft.com/3ZlwHf5

How's AI rollout doing in what's left of local newspapers? Oh.

"The tech giants must be persuaded to pay their fair share — not just for the content that is at the heart of their business, but also pay a fair contribution of taxes on their revenues and profits"
