I don't understand the political timidity when it comes to regulating social media. These are companies that have decimated the free press, fuelled race riots on our streets, undermined the mental health of our children, paid little tax and are now undermining liberal democracy itself.

I briefed PES on this myself in 2019
And four years later it remains every EU commissioner‘s main communications channel.
Untrue but you can see how the RW & Musk adherents would spin it.
No one trusts any of the MSM anyone because it's all a partisan shit show now. CNN and MSNBC ratings have tanked.
No one in the media tells the truth and we're not regulating that so why should socials be held to a different standard?
Not at all, seems a little weird.
We've had both sides of the media lie to the American people for years and years.
There are no more truth tellers in the media.
Absurd.
A more expansive, inclusive, and accessible press is the opposite of "decimated".
Gosh you could almost be describing a certain religion.
Maybe that's a clue
Or, maybe not, because I was always told we have the best politicians that money can buy?
And trust me, it’s better that we have it. We don’t need people hitting a place like Blue Sky with endless SLAPP suits because it had posts critical of, let’s say, a president or his tech lackey on it.
Guy above you wants to have his cake and eat it. We can’t have it both ways.
Whatever happens, the US is finished as a global leader.
There are numerous points between.
Starting with banning XShitter.
Their commitment to democracy is a gossamer of propaganda they will cast aside once they have achieved their ends.
PS. Being a creep now. Read your books on Empire. Excellent and troubling. 👍🙂
I guess you got some stick for publishing them, so a bit of positivity and all that.
Now into David Olusoga’s Black and British.
👍🙂

Now He said to them, “These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Lk 24:44

This is the source of the timidity. Just look at what the Tech companies donated to Trump’s inauguration compared to what they did to Biden’s. Even the faintest whiff of a candidate proposing regulation will get the algorithms and the company coffers turned against you.
Boycott McDonalds, KFC, Costa, Facebook, X, Google...
Social Media was merely their precursor, and both need new regulation.
Leveson 2 has never been so warranted….
Why Labour has not called for such is insanity.

am not old enough to know if we had similar rules before Mrs. T.
Fascinating to see how the merger between the political & media classes that @bylinetimes.bsky.social has documented for years in the UK is now taking root in the US - Musk, ultimate tech media baron, is in the US Government & attempting to call the shots everywhere
2 political scientists suggested that the boycott of The Sun in Liverpool led to a pro-Remain vote in 2016
People in Liverpool were more likely to read the pro-EU Daily Mirror

What laws would you introduce and more importantly, what are the undesired outcomes of those changes?

Absolute Freedom of Expression and Freedom of Speech is sacrosanct in democracy!
Two established media information platforms that are seen as no more the Propaganda Mouthpieces of the UK Unionist Establishment
Would Musk’s tweets be prohibited? On what grounds?
What would be the sanction against the platform? What’s the rule they need to comply with? You can’t legislate on a tweet by tweet basis.
If so, do we regard the considerable number of false/dangerous tweets from the owner of Twitter deliberate or he genuinely doesn't know what he's saying?
Musk is a political issue, not a legal one I thin.
Hold them to account
One would hope that countering with reality would help but it clearly doesn't, and those in charge benefit from the lies, so no incentive to change.
It’s the only way forward.
I’m all for fair and reasonable free speech and necessarily robust debate within society/SM’s, but I’d definitely support a Leveson style review/recommendations to legally regulate and, if necessary, block if non-compliant.
- Tommy Robinson regularly incites hatred.
- Do we ban some of Nigel Farage's content? If so, which ones?
- Kemi Badenoch?
Case in point - Robert Jenrick's statement yesterday, not far off Enoch Powell.
Where, exactly, do you draw the line?
The latter has fared badly since Elmo began his own crusade on "free speech" & firing his fact checkers (etc). It's unlikely Meta will manage any better
The more unscrupulous won't care which won't go down at all well particularly with US consumers
The interfering fucks.
I am increasing a militant Trading Standards type of tech regulator - merely regulate the surface don't care what's under the hood

All my life I've been told the first duty of a government is...
And if UK Govt isn't on TikTok, Telegram, Twitter etc, our enemies will be - from Farridge to Musk to Putin.
