As an #ICU doctor, telling families the truth & delivering bad news is a sad but important part of my job. Never have I thought these conversations can lead to my physical harm. This story makes me so sad. #GunReformNow www.cnn.com/2025/02/24/u...

Our democracy is sick. I’m a critical care doctor, and when a person is sick you don’t just sit back and hope they get better. You fight with every single thing you’ve got. That’s exactly what I’ll do to save our democracy.

Amazing to see so many people at SF #StandUpforScience representing to fight for life-saving research for our patients & families. 🎉💪🏾🙌🏾 Hands off our research, veterans' health care, climate forecasts, Medicare & Medicaid! Well-organized & inspirational event 🙏🏾🙌🏾

Read @jackiefmogensen.bsky.social's whole dispatch from the whole march: The organizers call for reversing those measures—ending “censorship and political interference in science,” securing and expanding scientific funding, and defending diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in science.

Our family's posters are READY to #StandUpforScience2025 tomorrow- I hope to see you there! standupforscience2025.org

"In an unprecedented move, the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) has begun mass terminations of research grants that fund active scientific projects because they no longer meet 'agency priorities'" www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Our country needs Medicaid, whether Trump supporters like to hear it or not, losing Medicaid will hurt everyone (except of course for ultra wealthy and Broligarch class). #SaveMedicaid #MedSky @protecthealthcare.medsky.social @doctorscouncilseiu.bsky.social

This censorship of science is SHAMEFUL. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

We’re ready to #StandUpforScience Join us Friday! @standupforscience.bsky.social

Join us on Friday to hear @carolynbertozzi.bskyverified.social speak at @standupforscience.bsky.social in SF. Science is for Everyone.

"The White House can lie all they want about how they're not stopping cancer research," the NIH source said, "but they're stopping cancer research on [NIH's] Bethesda campus." Can confirm. The many shifting rules and EOs and bans do seem designed to stop cancer research at #NIH.

Following the NIH decision to cap funding for indirect cost reimbursements at 15%, @nygenome.org Scientific Director Tom Maniatis calls for swift, united action. cell.com/cell/fulltex... Read his Commentary now in @cp-cell.bsky.social

One person sick with measles can infect 18 others. Chart: NPR, source: The Lancet

Since this is making the rounds on TikTok it must be #SnakeOilSunday. 🐍🛢️ Methylene Blue is a highly toxic and carcinogenic. While used to treat a few rare diseases, it is not safe for casual consumption. Do not make a cocktail of it.

It’s impossible to overstate how much damage Trump/Elon/Vought/RFKJ are doing to science in America. We need everyone who can to show up and demand action to save scientific research in this country. Scientists are trained to question everything which is why fascists always target them first.

We are experiencing an assault on science unparalleled by anything I’ve seen in my life. It’s not one issue or another anymore, the entire institution is under attack by the most powerful individuals in the country. This Friday, where will you be? standupforscience2025.org

Francis Collins, the NIH Director for 12 years, led the Human Genome Project and other NIH efforts for 32 years, resigned today. Key words from his resignation letter www.nytimes.com/2025/03/01/u...

Tom Maniatis coming in hot in @CellCellPress to spell out in no uncertain terms what cutting indirect cost rates to 15% will cost science. And a call to action: "A united front...is essential to preventing this devastating policy from taking effect." 💯 www.cell.com/cell/fulltex...

I love this recommendation that mentors in academic medicine ask their faculty mentees these questions: Are you doing what you love? Are you making it count twice? Are you staying focused? Great questions for us all! #meded #medsky journals.lww.com/academicmedi... (sorry, paywall)

Before coming to NIH Collins was at U Michigan. In the late 1980s his team identified CFTR as the gene mutated in cystic fibrosis (CF). This was a heroic achievement & paved the way for effective therapy — including the child of a high-ranking OMB official who is currently trying to destroy NIH.

Francis Collins, longtime NIH director with bipartisan bona fides*, retires as of yesterday. He returned to NIH in 2023 to focus on research in his own lab, in the NIH in-house intramural research campus. His letter seems to imply he wasn’t ready to leave. NIH is being torn down. 1/🧪 #academicsky

"Bloodbath" is an apt description. The number of deaths that will occur as a direct result of U.S. funding being axed is no different from indiscriminate bombing erasing entire populations during a war. It is tantamount to genocide. The U.S. was once the "good" guy. www.science.org/content/arti...

ICYMI: new MMWR has been published, showing that this year’s flu vaccine is decent at keeping people from needing to see the doctor… and pretty darn good at preventing kids’ (& to a lesser extent, adults’) flu hospitalization Also: it’s safe. And it’s not too late to get it.

Of the 4000 researchers at NIH, only 20% are tenured. They’re going to fire all the rest as their contracts come up for renewal, absolutely decimating research at the NIH. This is catastrophic, not just for Americans, but for the whole world. www.science.org/content/arti...

Caring for veterans is actually a mission-critical function. NIH-funding for research is a mission critical-function. Public health infrastructure is a mission-critical function.

Rubio terminated 5800 USAID contracts – more than 90% of its foreign aid programs – in defiance of the courts. Here’s a list of just some of the lifesaving awards that were terminated. Nearly all were Congressionally mandated. They’ve saved millions of lives. 🧵

Thousands of fired USAID employees were given 15 minutes today to clear out their personal belongings from headquarters.

I joined @pbsnews.org tonight to talk about Elon Musk ‘accidentally cancelling’ Ebola prevention And what must do to prepare for and respond to outbreaks all over the world It’s not just the right thing to do, but it keeps us all safer as well Watch ⬇️ youtu.be/4ZzNkcZe5v4

I talked to NIH officials, current and former, about what's been happening inside the agency since the Trump administration shut down their grantmaking pipeline in January. Their stories showed just how willing our new leaders are to break the law: www.theatlantic.com/health/archi...

Thanks to the @startribune.com for running this the same day I submitted it 👍🏻. Vaccinate your kids (and yourself) www.startribune.com/readers-writ...

86 children and 19000 adults have died from flu this season in the U.S. and that's with a vaccine. If we have no vaccines come September these numbers will increase. www.nbcnews.com/health/healt...

Sobering data about physician mortality. My mom fought her way out of poverty to become a physician dying at 47 yo of a rare blood cancer. “Black female physicians had higher mortality rates than all other physician subgroups and White female individuals in non–health care occupations.”

GOOD - MacArthur Foundation moving to emergency footing for nonprofit funding w/ increased giving, flexibility & trust www.macfound.org/press/perspe... I especially value them highlighting “flexible, trust-based models” that cover indirect costs at 29% & less onerous administrative requirements.

BREAKING: The NIH summer internship program (SIP) has been officially cancelled, across all institutes. It’s a sad loss for the brightest science students in America, for American science, and for future cures for diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s. 🧪 1/

The FDA just cancelled a meeting to select flu strains for next season's flu shots. "It's unclear what the canceled meeting will mean for Americans who want to get a flu vaccine next season." www.nbcnews.com/health/healt...

We take for granted the privilege of easy vaccine access in the U.S. Meanwhile, in parts of the world where I’ve worked, parents walk miles or travel for hours to get life-saving shots for their kids. #VaccinesSaveLives

Sec. Kennedy, you're incorrect. This *is* an unusual year for measles. This year has already passed 8 out of the past 15 years' *annual* counts. And we are only 2.5 months into 2025. Rather than falsehoods, you should publicly state support for MMR. Today marks the first measles death in 10 years.

In academic medicine, we often talk about promoting the pathway or pipeline of students into STEM. The Trump administration's cutting of summer training programs at NIH will have negative ripple effects for decades to come. #medsky www.training.nih.gov/research-tra...

A measles death in Texas. Think about how many kids get sick from the flu in every classroom. Now imagine a germ that is way more contagious and kills one out of every 300 or so sick kids. Imagine kids in every small school dying of an illness that is fully preventable. Life without measles vaccine
