Scientific Integrity Question Consider a fictional AI system M, and a scientist S who wishes to use M in their research pipeline (e.g., for analysis and/or interpretation). Functionally, M is not fully understood by S. In your opinion, is it acceptable that S uses M in their research pipeline?

Today is publication day for the new book - Critical Data Studies. But since my copies are stuck in Holyhead parcel pileup & open access version not yet available on publisher website I'm saving marketing stuff to new year. As a launch day it's a bit of an anti-climax! But it's no longer 'in press'

I have a draft of a paper on AI that I would really, really like some feedback on. It's about whether it's a good idea to use AI technologies to persuade people of things (spoiler: I say no). You can find it here if you are so inclined: philpapers.org/rec/MCKSOS

Even though X/Twitter is imploding, our study on the ethical quoting of social media posts applies regardless of the platform. Check out our (@lenandlar.bsky.social) paper from 2022, might be useful particularly for #education researchers. doi.org/10.1177/1747...

AI hype is making AI researchers forget painfully learned lessons core to the field. There's an emerging cope that progress in capabilities isn't slowing down—it's just invisible as benchmarks are saturated; vibe checks are useless because models are now superhuman so we can't perceive improvement.
