@GrahamDowns I lost my Mom 1 year ago. It’s that phase of life our generation is moving into, sadly. It’s normal, but that doesn’t make it any less painful. All the very best with the arrangements that now need to happen.

@GrahamDowns I’m so sorry Graham. 💔 Thinking of you & your family!

@uastronomer Glad you're getting with the times, old man. Two-ex, three-ex, ten-ex FTW! 😂😉

@uastronomer It’s been decades since I last had a Windoze machine, but back then, I used Notepad for basically a singular task: to change clipboard content into plaintext. (This was before there were keystrokes to paste without formatting, or clipboard managers with preferences for this, etc) […]

@uastronomer @GrahamDowns Grrrrr. You beat me by 3s, Graham! 🤬😉 I just completed the DM Crossword in 38 seconds! Can you beat my time? https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2025-06-11-mini-crossword-11-june-2025/

@GrahamDowns Ooooh a favorite point of friction early on in our marriage. My wife is a type-A, by the clock person. I am ... err... not. Time is a suggestion to me, a rough idea of when something might occur. We had to compromise (to stay married 😂), which was if there was a specific […]

@malmorrow Hey Siri, show me an example of a wrong social media opinion. (😂😉)

@GrahamDowns Ok, now we're getting somewhere! Your post + screenshots rang some distant bells for me. Thanks for bearing with me. As it turns out, we tried channels. A couple of senior leaders tried to get them to take, but they didn't. I see 6 Channels under the left-nav Teams tab (reason I […]

@GrahamDowns I just went into a one on one chat I had with someone yesterday, and all the messages in there have "Copy Link" as well. Something could be different between our installations. I'm going to assume there is a fair bit of preference/feature sets that the admins can enable/disable […]

@GrahamDowns From the elipses on a random message in that "chat".
comment in response to post
@GrahamDowns I would love to understand if we're just having a nomenclature misunderstanding, or if there is a technical difference in how our orgs surface Teams features to us. Everything on my side is "Chats". There is no mention of "Channels" anywhere. But […] [Original post on hachyderm.io]

@GrahamDowns Oh, we have many large channels with many members. For like the whole of Ops, or one for Ops and the devs. And large ones for specific projects. Etc. Maybe that's what you mean by "public" -- i.e. just large "private" channels, but with many members? I have those intermixed with my […]
comment in response to post
@GrahamDowns Hmmmm, I'll be honest, perhaps I simply don't know what "public" chats are, then, in Teams -- or we're speaking past each other. 100% of the chats I have have specific members in them. And I only see chats that I've created or I've been specifically invited to.

@GrahamDowns What is a "private" and "public" channel? Aren't they all just channels, some with just one person, and some with more than one? I have no separation on my side.

@GrahamDowns Hint: in the new one, you don't have to even double click the meeting. Single click it, and a Join button will appear over the meeting block. Click to join. As for the slider, I prefer that. I create many calendar blocks that don't require meetings, e.g. personal appointments, time […]

@GrahamDowns I’m curious. Why are they more difficult to schedule & join? (Ok, I don’t schedule many, but I join many, and it’s been the same for me on the new Teams as the old Teams calendar — unless I’m missing something obvious).

@chrispoole In what way, Chris? (no antagonism in that question, pure curiosity, because that's not always clear on social media).

@uastronomer When I worked at a credit card issuing bank, one of my Linux-team colleagues was adamant that he would never open an account with us, because he knew in what state our security was. I kept countering that with "And you really think it's better anywhere else?"

@uastronomer I was trying to google it, and found many articles about it, but they all had their own edits of the interaction. I just want to see the whole damn back&forth, why is that so hard?!?

@uastronomer Watch the clip. At first he misheard her, and then it hit him. And he started waffling, even more than usual. And eventually got to his normal “what a nasty question” which he repeated a few times. He was clearly *not* happy. So good. More of that, please, journalists!
comment in response to post
@uastronomer Did you see the question from a journalist yesterday about “TACO trade”? Where she said traders on Wall Street are using it, with it meaning “Trump Always Chickens Out” and it’s the reason the markets aren’t reacting too negatively when he announces ridiculous new tariffs. It blew […]

@uastronomer I see what you mean. And yes, in that respect, not all of it has gone away, but a lot has. E.g. no shifting gearboxes ("transmissions"), clutches, or (I believe) front-to-back driveshafts. And in some cases, an electronic diff instead of a mechanical one. It's a vastly simpler […]
comment in response to post
@uastronomer I'm just spitballing here, but perhaps it has to do with the assumed definition of "transmission". In the US, in common use of that term, it typically refers to what you would call the "gearbox" in South Africa. So yes, while a driveshaft of any kind is technically part of the […]

@uastronomer @malmorrow Can’t recall if I’ve had fresh guavas. Probably. But canned guavas in that sugary syrup, with evaporated milk poured over… HEAVENLY! A favorite dessert of mine growing up.
comment in response to post
@malmorrow Your point stands about many European distances vs South Africa, indeed! But about the term “sheer scale”, my state of Texas would like a word. Where you can drive for over 12 hours in a roughly straight line (at the highway speed limit) and still not even have crossed into an […]

@chrispoole Earlier today I texted my sis+hub who watched it live if I should bother. They said watch a highlight of it on YT. In other words, a “normal” Monaco yawnfest. (My least favorite “race” of the year).

@BigG This is where it’s awesome to have a rich tapestry of 3rd party clients! E.g. the one I use (Ivory, iOS-only), has it built in, and even detects the language, it doesn’t rely on the poster setting it.

@uastronomer @GrahamDowns Shame on you for underestimating your daughter! 😂😉😂

@GrahamDowns Well, in true parenting experience, what probably happened there was that Red was holding Blue (like you would carry a rolled up rug, e.g.) and drew on the wall using Blue's head. They both giggled non-stop while doing it. So Blue is *technically* correct that Red did it, but Blue […]

@uastronomer @GrahamDowns Probably about 1.5 mins. Some of the rhyme ones I'm not 100% sure of, given accents, so I did 4 or 5, just to ensure I pass. Even then, slightly dodgy. LOL. </overthinkers-anonymous>

@chrispoole I'll go further than you. I detest him as a driver (and partly as a person, too). But credit where credit is due: that first corner overtake was phenomenal! One of, if not thé, best of the year from anyone.
