Publications in the past week built substantially on our knowledge of the brain's waste disposal system—glymphatics—and the implications on sleep and brain aging. Featuring exceptional work by Nedergaard Lab and @jonykipnis.bsky.social erictopol.substack.com/p/our-sleep-... open-access

Out in @cellcellpress.bsky.social ! We show that oscillations in norepinephrine and cerebral blood volume are the missing pieces that link NREM sleep to clearance of waste from the brain 🧠💤 www.cell.com/cell/fulltex...

Our lab at Yale U/Wu Tsai Institute has a postdoctoral position on neurodegeneration, neuro-glial-vascular biology using 2photon, calcium/voltage imaging, gene editing,transcriptome/proteome, 3D EM, translational neurosci/chemistry. Email me if interested. Forward to those interested pls

The stories behind out research are mostly hidden, since they are typically not part of the papers we write. Could we include these creative background stories in a section of the research paper format, maybe just as online supplements? What do you think? open.substack.com/pub/matthias...

How the brain gets rid of its chemical waste through the glymphatics during sleep, via blood vessel oscillations, regulated by norepinephrine. Impeded by Ambien! www.cell.com/cell/abstrac... www.science.org/content/arti...

Such a cool study linking the striking vascular pulsations in sleep to neurochemical oscillations, ultimately driving CSF clearance. Understanding the role of other sleep stages (eg REM) in clearance, and how sleep architecture cooperates to clear the brain will be super interesting in the future.

New: Papadopoulos, Kipnis and colleagues present new findings on how lymphatic outflow pathways shape brain health, a critical frontier in brain-immune communication. https://buff.ly/40724ub

Excited having this work out. It may explain many discrepancies in the field. This data made me think of the yoga head stand… not sure it’s a good thing… luckily I can’t do them anymore 😉

Credit is infinitely divisible in academia: the more authors on a paper, the merrier. Middle authors contribute so much and share in the credit, while that doesn’t take away any of the credit from the lead contributors.
