The position is for nine months and will not turn into a tenure track position, unfortunately. It is paid out of an endowment that we use to hire a distinguished teacher into the department every handful of years in fields that we don't typically cover.

It's not perfect, and I'm sorry that the terms of the position aren't compatible. We'd like to hire for longer but couldn't get the funds. We also struggled with whether to advertise at all, and landed on it being better to have a position on offer for someone who might be a good fit than to withhold

We don't have anyone, or any profile, in mind — someone without a tenure track job and a senior historian are both eligible and encouraged to apply, as long as they have significant experience in teaching both large lectures and small seminars in ancient or medieval history.

We have no one in mind, this is a totally open search. Committee hasn’t even discussed potential candidates.

In some ways it is, but in more ways it reflects the department's rejection of exploitative labor practices. We are sensitive to the precarity of any one year position, and when we decided to go forward, we made sure that the salary at least gestured toward the value of the labor, and cost of living

PRIME PLACEMENT — the cover isn't available on the OA version (ie the version everyone is reading, based on the metrics) but the inside endorsement page is!
(I will never live this down and I've learned never to build a plan on the presumption that people will say no.)

It is a tremendous honor to receive a review which really 'gets' what you're trying to do (even piecing together the rationale for the appendix!) and suggests ways to build on *and* depart from the analysis. May we all be so lucky. (And the last line is a delight.)
