COBOL is here to stay www.zdnet.com/article/if-c...

(AP) — Elon Musk’s cost-cutting team is eliminating jobs at the vehicle safety agency that oversees Tesla and has launched investigations into deadly crashes involving his company’s cars. #OligarchEra 🇺🇸 apnews.com/article/musk...

One of the things a previous employer got right was that we should always try to hire people who were smarter and more skilled than we were. Looking back, you have to be a very secure individual to actual do that, but the idea was to get the best people to work there that we possibly could find.

This is an important read. Gov Mills stood up to the wannabe Führer as he threatened the people of Maine with extortion because she rejected his Nazi plan to eliminate whole groups of people. The more public resistance he faces, the more likely that he’ll fail. www.maine.gov/governor/mil...

Which part of Germany was under Soviet control, ask yourself

Let me get this straight. Elon and his team of tech geniuses don’t understand how SQL databases work, are ignorant of COBOL programming, can’t secure their web server, and have now failed to properly configure an email server so it’s messages don’t get marked as spam. Is that right?

I wouldn’t trust Nate Silver to accurately predict baseball results at this point, much less describe competence in other disciplines.

Elon Musk is not the owner of the US Government and his email to all federal workers is bullshit

I am cautious about mass spamming the DOGE email. Please remember that the FBI is once again politicized with a wide domestic definition of who the enemy is. Make tactical choices in your protests that you can afford; not viral ones you can regret.

I just read this obit of one of the last Tuskegee fliers. It's both inspiring and infuriating, both for the past and our present racist overlords, who would deny this man his accomplishments all over again. He must be frightening to them, a Black man who killed Nazis. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/05/u...

Open season for spear phishing federal workers. Hopefully the various litigants representing workers are drafting new motions etc.

Lol. My department just sent out an email saying not to reply to Musk's "What did you do last week?" email until they receive guidance. Some have received it, I have not.

Here's a copy of the email being sent to federal employees. In case anyone is wondering, the sender is [email protected]. Do with that what you will.

The Justice Department is investigating a New York sheriff for declining to detain someone on behalf of ICE. It's not clear what the DOJ could charge him with. “There is no such crime as failing to help ICE do its job," one legal expert said. nysfocus.com/2025/02/21/t...

The resignation of a federal employee must be voluntary. I highly doubt failure to respond to this email---sent on a Saturday---would be understood by any court to be a voluntary resignation.

It really is a swasticar now.

BREAKING: Pope Francis is in critical condition after suffering a prolonged asthmatic respiratory crisis Saturday morning.

Seeing a lot of comments that Matt Damon's Odysseus should have Mycenaean armour. But... Odysseus is not a Mycenaean figure. He is a character in an Archaic Greek epic. Insisting that his armour should reflect the Bronze Age is glossing over all sorts of complexity www.standard.co.uk/culture/film...

How many child cancer researchers did they fire to pay for this?

Running thread of people trying to normalize the sieg heil. It's not an "Elon gesture", it's not autism, it's not your heart going out, it's not parody or trolling. It's fucking despicable. Don't ever let this shit become normal. Fuck any excuse given, there is none. Zero tolerance. 1. Elon Musk

Ukraine has not suffered "millions" of losses by any reliable estimate, either in terms of civilian or military casualties. isw.pub/UkraineFacts...

Important 🧵: Stanford political scientist uses data to show DOGE is attacking “liberal” agencies, not focusing on waste & inefficiency: “The hardest hit agencies are those that regulate industry, protect public health, and expand access to education.”

Something that's maddening about the cases involving DOGE access to our most sensitive private data and the irreparable harm standard is that the ACCESS ITSELF is the irreparable harm, and some judges just aren't getting that. (Some are, e.g., storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...)

Not new, but the spread of this behavior is a bad sign.

I’ve been hacked over in the other place, which in one way is rather a blessing. The process of trying to sort it out is, however, exasperating. This tweet (which a friend screenshot and sent) did make me laugh though, so that’s something!

This is an admission that most restaurants have a bad business model.

UPDATE: Meta is continuing to censor anti-Musk ads. It has removed a Facebook ad calling for a boycott of Tesla, saying that it violates the company's policy on "unacceptable business practices" muskwatch.com/subscribe

Correct me if I'm wrong, but because the Joint Chiefs are not actually in the chain of command if Trump wanted to use the military to -- for instance -- violently suppress protestors he'd issue such an order to Hegseth who would then issue it to USNORTHCOM, no?

Historians have the right to expect that discussion of their work be conducted in a civil manner—but that right can be violated by hate speech and online threats. The AHA has developed a guide for historians encountering harassment on social media. 🗃️

Strong statement by retired Rear Admiral Mike Smith, President of NSL4A: "National Security Leaders for America strongly condemns the removal of senior military officers without just cause. ... Removing experienced leaders with meritorious records weakens the force and emboldens America’s enemies."
