i think so long as I use a toon shader i can get away with geometry like this. it doesn't need to be one connected mesh, right?

that's a lil better! the power of tweaking the vertices with G, adding new vertices with E removing parts of the geometry that doesn't work with X, and rejoining vertices so the faces make sense with F. Their powers combined makes GEXF‼️
