β€œLevi & Korsinsky, LLP's investigation indicates that legally protected data may have been unlawfully intercepted during transactions with the Hoopla Website, particularly affecting customers who borrowed movies or TV shows on the Hoopla Website.” πŸ“š www.accessnewswire.com/newsroom/en/...

"Like so many things that stand in opposition to nature, clock time became a tool of oppression: β€œthe Western separation of clock time from the rhythms of nature helped imperialists establish superiority...” (Zadeh)." @librarianmer.bsky.social meredithfarkas.substack.com/p/with-work-...

"This ... cannot be viewed in isolation. More than anything, this β€˜transformation’ – presented under the rhetoric of modernisation and AI-readiness – represents a troubling shift in the power dynamics between academic libraries and commercial providers, especially those who hold (near) monopolies."

Clarivate apparently told their advisory board about the decision to stop offering eBook purchasing at the same time that the announcement went out to everyone. What is the point of having an "advisory board" if you're not even going to run things by them BEFORE making decisions?

Major news! A court in Montana has just declared SB458, a bill that "defines sex" in a way that ends the legal recognition of transgender people in Montana, as facially unconstitutional. This is the first time a bill defining sex has been ruled on! Huge win for trans people in MT!

Must watch speech by neuroscientist Kailyn Price at a HHS rally protesting funding cuts to science. "Cutting indirect costs is like telling a football team to work with only the players. No lights for the field, no physical therapists for the players, no water for the showers."

There are two town halls scheduled for this. I encourage librarians affected by this decision to register and make your voices heard. I plan to attend both. πŸ“š discover.clarivate.com/pq-books-upd...

In all the horrible shit happening it’s genuinely moving that Leonard Peltier is free www.democracynow.org/2025/2/19/le...

I wrote a blog post about generalized reciprocity / community time and opined that at my current job I would never have to teach classes while super sick. Yesterday, with a migraine that made me pukey, I was proven very, very wrong and it broke my heart a little (a lot). edushare.ing/2N

I heard owl sounds and was 100% convinced that it was my husband watching animal videos on YouTube (as usual). Turns out there is a real great horned owl just outside our window.

Keep hollowing out the public sector. It will soon own nothing but will pay forever. Clarivate/Proquest is a major ebook provider to many academic libraries (including the one I do collection development for). clarivate.com/news/clariva...

Since federal health information is getting harder to come by, I thought I'd share this new resource. Cornell's College of Veterinary Medicine launched an online Avian Flu Resource Center--a one-stop clearinghouse for trustworthy information on bird flu. www.vet.cornell.edu/highly-patho...

This made me laugh for the first time in I don’t know how long.

And a (much better) solution appears! h/t to @kaetrena.bsky.social and thanks @brentgwarner.com

For those with a free bitly account: starting in March, bitly is going to send users not directly to your link, but to an intermediate page with ads. Great timing given that my mission-critical survey that went out Monday and goes until 3/10 uses a bitly link & QR code! Total dick move!

Did you know that Gov. Hochul's proposed budget includes a $10 million cut to library construction aid? At a time when we need libraries more than ever? If you're in New York State, take a moment to let your reps know NO CUTS TO LIBRARIES. oneclickpolitics.global.ssl.fastly.net/messages/edi...

Do not engage with trolls. BLOCK them. Certain people thrive on the controversy, the attention. Do not give it to them. Feel free to share with anyone who needs it: How to Block a user on Bluesky (including screenshots of what they'll see, etc): debbieohi.link/how-to-block #BlueSkyTips

A bit of good news out of DC: @howard.edu has received R1 status from the ACE, "widely considered to be the highest research activity classification among colleges and universities in the United States." Congrats to Howard! thedig.howard.edu/all-stories/...

Hey so, this is serious, please get your flu shot. The flu is no trivial matter, that’s the trap people fall into thinking it’s minor. With recent censorship of health information, please do everything you can to take preventative measures. Vaccinate, wash your hands, MASK. 😷

Tonight, my husband and son made what might be the worst chocolate chip cookies I've ever eaten. Given that I baked the same cookies over winter break (and they were awesome!), I truly have no idea what they did to make them so awful (flavor, consistency, everything was wrong). Poor guys!

People who are telling you that there's a lot of fraud in Medicaid are lying to you in order to try to convince you to support taking healthcare away from children on dialysis. Because the only way to convince enough normal people to harm disabled children is by lying.

AskJAN has been such a reliable and valuable resource for employers and employees alike for finding info about disabilities and potential accommodations. Disappearing information about Long COVID just makes life harder for people trying to remain productive workers. thesicktimes.org/2025/02/11/n...

Gov Hochul can fire the mayor. She should have done so when the scope and scale of his cascading congenital corruption career was laid out in federal indictments. She waited for him to go to trial. Now that injustice has taken its course she is the only reason he remains in office. Step up Hochul.

for pity’s sake, I am BEGGING university leaders to stop framing this issue in terms of what this will cost the university. people dont care! EXPLAIN WHAT THIS WILL COST THE PUBLIC: closed hospitals and clinics, skipped treatments, loss of access to experimental drugs, unemployment, recession

In a blistering statement, the American Bar Association describes "attacks on constitutionally protected birthright citizenship, the dismantling of USAID and the attempts to criminalize" diversity initiatives as "wide-scale affronts to the rule of law itself." https://buff.ly/4bb7dqp

This is honestly terrifying. Friends, if you live in one of the 17 states involved in this suit (follow the link), PLEASE contact your state attorney general's office and ask them to drop the case!

Fun fact: several groundbreaking cancer drugs of the past 5 years that have saved thousands of lives are generated by horseshoe-crab reproductive organs

My son got outstanding soloist (on the alto sax) at a jazz festival yesterday (his second commendation in 3 months)!!! This kid started exhibiting a love of music at 1 and demanded to take piano lessons at 4. It's been an amazing journey watching him grow as a musician over the years. So proud!!! 😍😭

As an alum, I know Wesleyan is great and all, but are there ANY other college/university Presidents speaking out like he is? More of this please! (I mean, my college's president is sending nothingburger emails that literally have been generated by AI, so not a lot of inspo around here!)
