I hope so! My concern is primarily on the defensive end for both obviously, although I don't think this contract would destroy a team even if Ivey remains a neutral defender. JD needs to become a good defender and probably develop a Bam-like 17' jumper for spacing.

Right. Do you envision them living into those contracts or concerned they're both overpays that could hinder the future of Cade as a Piston?

100% - and Stew locked up on what will look like a ridiculous bargain eventually. Ausar's extension will be interesting, esp seeing what he can become on O, but still being quite young/raw.

What's a realistic number DET can retain DS for? I hope they don't pay him even close $22M. If he's getting >$15/yr, I'm probably moving on to Ty Jerome and hoping his playmaking & shooting can elevate your bench unit. Plus, he can spot start. Really need Cade/JI to level up on D though.

Yeah, I don't think he's a great defender, but I would also expect him to play a different role from the one Dennis filled. He's not a true PG. He would come off the bench (maybe spot start at 2-3 if JI, Cade, or Ausar sit) and be a secondary playmaker with WITH or instead of Malik (who is more 1D)

the problem with finding a "stretch big" who isn't Stew is then you're probably trading Stew if you want that other big to get any minutes. Maybe you find someone who can play 4 next to Duren or Stew? Now you're taking some Ausar/Ron minutes. I still think Stew is our best stretch big trial option.

Because this resets the extension $$ for our guys?

Let Isaiah Stewart shoot 3s and find a way to get him 25 minutes consistently.

🤷‍♂️

For sure! He's also still a baby and we saw what he can do scratching and clawing, being an energy guy, etc. But really rarely get to see what he might be capable of offensively as a grows and his shot becomes more consistent. What does he look like with the ball in the halfcourt? In PnR, etc.

Sounds like Ron will be playing significant minutes as well?

Feels like Ausar is the future starting PF, despite maybe only being 6'6"-6'7". Athleticism, wingspan, rim protection, rebs, & playmaking potential at PF overcome other deficits. Ron slots as SF due to more slight frame imo despite being taller. How/where do you think Trajan & Co view them fitting?
comment in response to post
Honestly, unless the BEST comp is Malik Beasley. That would also be completely fine with me :)
comment in response to post
I wondered if they would take a flyer on him as potential future 4
comment in response to post
Yeah, I feel like that future PF slot and 3rd C slots are more critical, BUT don't know if you're getting your future starting PF at 37 in this draft. AND it may be Ausar anyway. But yeah, Chaz *could be* an immediate Beez replacement.

Good point. Letting those agents know we got options.

That's Malik, too. So, if JI starts at the 2, then he has to be primary back up PG as well. We're comfortable with JI as primary backup PG?
comment in response to post
He's 23 already though. Feels like he's a THJ or (gasp) even Malik replacement
comment in response to post
That's my thought. Moving Sass and Simone. I'd love to keep Dennis, even if he and JI split backup PG minutes. But otherwise, we have no 3rd string PG.
comment in response to post
I can see that for sure. I don't feel SUPER comfortable still without a vet PG on the team though and Chaz does not fill that spot. Trajan/JB really putting stock in JI as backup PG? JI, Chaz, Beasely, Ron, Stew as second unit?
comment in response to post
Yeah, I think Chaz is ready to roll and play backup 2 minutes, so I'm not sure THJ is coming back, as JI will almost definitely start and I view Bease as a SG too, esp with both Ausar and Ron demanding SF minutes.

Do you see DET moving on from Sasser to clear some space in the Guard room for Chaz?
