This Friday, March 21, at 5 PM Kyiv time, the Interdisciplinary Academic Center Crimean Studies and RUTA Association will host an online lecture on Crimea under Russian occupation. Register via the link below. surl.li/rcaehc #UkrainianView

On March 18, 2014, a russian sniper in Crimea killed the first Ukrainian serviceman in this war — Serhiy Kokurin. At the time russia claimed no russian troops were in Crimea, insisting it was all so-called "local self-defense forces." Eleven years later russia continues to kill our best people.

Why can't we allow russia to claim Crimea? Just a few thoughts 1️⃣ Allowing russia to fully annex Crimea would set a dangerous precedent, encouraging other nations with imperial ambitions to act similarly. It sends the message that "might makes right," leading to more aggression.

Since 2023, Ukraine has held iftar with Muslim service members, the President of Ukraine, diplomats, and religious leaders. As a Crimean Tatar, I’m glad to see our traditions honored at the state level. Ukraine upholds the rights and freedoms of its indigenous peoples, many of whom are Muslim.

Another Ukrainian political prisoner has died in a russian prison. The exact date and cause of death remain unknown. What is known is that Rustem Viratti was tortured and severely beaten. All his court hearings were closed. Does anyone still think Russia respects human rights or the rule of law?

Today I’m thinking about girls. Including the ones in these photos. Girls who had a chance to grow up in a country that would never harm them, who could have advanced Crimean Tatar scholarship, become writers, artists.

Today marks one of the saddest anniversaries for me 😢 Eleven years ago, on March 3, 2014, Reshat Ametov stood alone in protest against russia’s occupation of Crimea. He was kidnapped by russian forces, and 12 days later, his body was found bearing signs of torture (details in the quoted tweet)

I'm sure you can understand what's written on the screen, even if you don't know Ukrainian 😄

This is a photo from the protests in Crimea in February 2014. A girl holds a sign that says, "Save us from russian soldiers," hoping that those who promised to protect us would keep their word and come to help the people of Crimea. What would the world say to her today?

The girl in this photo is four years old. She lives in Crimea and doesn’t yet know that in just over ten years, her home will be occupied. Today is the Day of Crimean Resistance to russian Occupation, and I want to share a few thoughts below 👇

It is deeply painful to see Crimea changed after the occupiers came. A place that gave life to the finest people and the brightest talents has become dangerous for them. A land once filled with freedom has become the darkest prison for its people in the hands of the occupiers

No peace is possible as long as even a SINGLE square kilometer of Ukrainian land remains under occupation! Ceding territory means leaving people as permanent hostages to a terrorist regime while the world stands by and watches, allowing their suffering and deaths.

Today Reshat Ametov would've turned 50 years old 💔

If you ever find yourself in Lviv, stop by "Krymskyi Dvoryk" for lunch 😋 The owner, a Crimean Tatar woman Lerane, opened this restaurant in Lviv. Before the full-scale invasion, it was located in Irpin maps.app.goo.gl/M1ea6kVW33Ed...

January 12 marks Ukrainian Political Prisoner Day in Ukraine. Unfortunately, due to russia's oppressive regime, this day remains tragically relevant. It now also includes those unjustly imprisoned by russia in territories it has occupied since 2014.

My friend Hirano Takashi, a Japanese journalist who has been living in Ukraine since 2008, has written a book about life in Ukraine during the war. In the photo, I'm showing the pages where he wrote about his friends and shared my story. You can buy it here: amzn.asia/d/b7Efsxh

If you need a 2025 calendar, I have the perfect suggestion for you: the auction winner on the @ricktheukrainian.bsky.social's platform will receive this fantastic calendar with watercolor paintings of Crimea: www.myminiauction.com/rickrollersa... 👇
