great to see @squigglyrick.bsky.social moving away from substack. Keen to see others do the same! How about it @patricklenton.bsky.social? Just like there's no ethical consumption under capitalism, it's hard to keep your keyboard clean on the internet, but substack seems particularly keen on nazis.

I'm afraid to go to the shops in case I run into a Liberal asshole who wants me to vote for billionaires and climate catastrophe

🧵Spotted at an Easter Fair in Aotearoa New Zealand: A small human (4?) is clutching a shark plushie like a talisman as she looks around her with a thoughtful expression. She's not sure about this market business, but she's got her shark, so everything's gonna be okay. (1)

All of the things that might solve problems in society are actually about reducing the distance between the poorest and the richest. UBI and taxing the rich would be a great start toward this

We could very easily afford universal basic income and housing for everyone if we just taxed the rich, companies, and fossil fuels sensibly. And free university education too! by "we" I mean Australia, but it applies to a lot of countries, actually!

🧵Spotted on a Very Rainy Easter Market Day in Aotearoa New Zealand: A young human (8?) is dancing down a quiet street. Grinning, his eyes closed, he does a twirl here. He does a hop-skip there. He stretches his arms out and does a little tap on the spot. Unfettered joy, ignoring the rain. (1)

Gabapentin and metformin are on here and I know those are common, plus a few generics, so check your bottles to see if Glenmark was the manufacturer and if so contact your pharmacy to see if your lot is subject to recall

oh hey, if we're judging people based on whether they'll ever pay taxes, can we start with billionaires?

Anything but the most expansive definition of 'woman' hurts all women. A narrow definition means the boundaries now have to be defended. Cue vigilante 'border guards' popping up in every public loo, changing room, gym... Tall women, women with deep voices, athletic builds etc will be challenged.

I think vegetative microscopy is an excellent new euphemism for AI theconversation.com/a-weird-phra...

I am tall, broad shouldered, independent, & into technology. I was never going to be able to perform feminity "correctly". It's caused a lot of trouble over the years, but I naively thought we were finally getting to a place where no one had to perform their gender "correctly" in order to exist. 1/

Trans people are people first and foremost. Their healthcare care, gender affirming or otherwise, is between them and their doctors. People's chromosomes and genitalia are no one's business.

Speaking as a recovering asshole, i.e., someone who's made a specific effort to be nicer here than he was elsewhere, it's important to remember that shitty behavior was/is encouraged on other services because anger is a prime driver for "engagement," and engagement gets followers and sells ads, etc.

🧵Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand: A man (50s?) wearing a suit, suspenders, with an impressively curled moustache is explaining to junior colleagues (20s) how the game Space Invaders worked. Suddenly they're on a mission to the old-school gaming arcade around the corner to play! (1)

Dutton: "People have seen food prices go up by 30%." That's a lie (they went up by 12%) #leadersdebate

🧵Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand: A man (70s?) and a small human (3?) are walking down a hilly street after a windy night, righting all the rubbish bins that have blown over. Small human is sternly supervising. He'll not rest until Grandad has everything back in its right place! (1)

And now, a cat break for your timeline.

I regret to inform you that this form was made in great haste and does not verify whether you entered valid contact information.

Anyway when I end up being like "I'll change in a minute, I'll just answer these two emails real quick" but then end up working 8-10 hours in my pajamas, I refer to that as "working remotely from the soft office" and I suggest you all do the same It's a legit office, it counts

🧵Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand: A teen (14?) is telling her dad about her worries about the chaos in the world. Her dad listens calmly, nodding and sipping his coffee. Finally, he says with absolute Dad certainty. "Well, love...I reakon some people just need to calm down." (1)

George's daily vignettes are beacons of joy and peace. I go looking for them every day.

🧵Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand: Two men (20s?) are strolling through the centre of town. One's strumming a guitar and is singing snatches of song. The other's armed with notebook and pen and is suggesting phrases and words, scribbling furiously. Lyrics and melodies on the go. (1)

Apple CEO Tim Cook has unveiled the new iPhone17 which will honour the US President by folding when a small amount of pressure is applied.

🧵Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand: A young human (12?) is cycling, beaming as he dinks a friend on the handlebars. She's wearing a lei of red flowers and is laughing at something he's just said, her hands up in the air. A snatched moment of happiness, feet whirring on the pedals. (1)

1. LLM-generated code tries to run code from online software packages. Which is normal but 2. The packages don’t exist. Which would normally cause an error but 3. Nefarious people have made malware under the package names that LLMs make up most often. So 4. Now the LLM code points to malware.

In November, we spoke to @marthawells.com who created one of the most iconic characters in 21st-century science fiction: Murderbot, reluctant savior of humanity. Here's how Murderbot saved her life.

🧵Spotted on Market Day in Aotearoa New Zealand: A burly bald man (60s?) is sitting at his stall with a tiny new human (3 months?) laying on his lap. With a huge grin he says: "Where's a smile for Poppa? Where's that smile?!" Suddenly he lets out a booming, delighted laugh. Poppa got his smile. (1)

Just saw a comment on a recipe site asking if pumpkin soup is healthy. No sir. It is not. It is dead. If your pumpkin soup is healthy then I have concerns...
