This is literally true. Many carmakers pay no attention at all to established human factors research, nor do they conduct appropriate usability testing.
Worse, some *do* do the testing, and then ignore the feedback in favor of some exec's "ooh! shiny!"
100%. I'm happy that I can do pretty much everything I needwhen driving from the steering wheel in my car, but some things are still on the screen, and in order to be shinier it's a step back from the car it replaced! Give me buttons that I can get muscle memory with!
Having not driven a car for about 15 years I doubt that I could do so in a current one; and it's more than activating the windscreen wipers when I was hoping to use the turn indicator. The idea of a touch screen in a car is daunting to me.
