In Wijtschate’s Hospicestraat in 2020, the most impressive discovery was a series of stairs leading to a German dugout, the Kortestollen. While maps indicated this system was near the road, its exact location and extent had remained unknown until our excavation.

Indian war bonds poster, WW1.

I use my Linesman out on tour and it really is a fantastic bit of equipment. Makes orientation and understanding of the ground during the war so much easier and helps both old and new visitors in visualising how trench systems used the topography to have advantageous positions.

A very clear picture of Hawthorn Redoubt

The archaeological features we uncovered in Messines in 2012 were exceptional. However, what has stayed with me the most was the discovery of the mortal remains of a missing soldier. It turned out to be a defining moment in the course of my professional journey, a focus I still maintain to this day.

Very poignant remembrance ceremony at the Hawthorn Craters in memory of the men of ALL nations who fought and died across the battlefields of Hawthorn Ridge & Beaumont Hamel

Another 1981 snapshot of Newfoundland Memorial Park, Beaumont Hamel, Somme. These are the German front line wire pickets. I think they'd not long removed the barbed wire because the sheep were getting caught on it.

It was good to see The Last Post at the Menin Gate this Thursday so well attended, many of those were school groups paying their respects #WW1 #RemembranceDay2024 #Ypres

We Will Remember Them

Nice typo here!

Good to see LinesMan is use

This weekend we begin the annual period of Remembrance of which the Poppy is the symbol. I took this photo last week on the battlefields of 1918: who will you be remembering this weekend?

Leutnant Baensch of the German Field Artillery Regiment No.4 strikes an impressive pose in a trench near La Basseé, 1916. The pistol appears to be some kind of pocket pistol but it's hard to tell the exact model. Small pistols like these were often privately purchased.

On this day in 1918, John McCrae died of pneumonia. Born in Guelph in 1872, he served as a soldier and surgeon during the First World War. After his friend, Lt. Alexis Helmer, was killed at the Second Battle of Ypres, McCrae wrote In Flanders Field.

I found this German helmet on the Somme in the early 1980s when I was 17. It was lying at the bottom of a mine crater at Carnoy, in the former no man’s land, where a farmer must have flung it after his plough dragged it up. The craters are long-since filled in.

November’s late afternoon sun illuminates the panels of the memorial to the missing, at Faubourgs D’Amiens CWGC, Arras. Nearly 35,000 British & Commonwealth men, lost in the Arras sector, but having no known graves, are commemorated, here, including my own great uncle.

One more from IWM's new art galleries, featuring Paul Nash's The Menin Road (1919). Two figures pick their way along a road in a shattered, shell-blasted landscape. Nash once referred to this area as 'the most frightful nightmare of a country', and his painting shares that nightmare with you.
