From September 2022: "all the rhetoric of levelling up, without delivery, has prepared the ground nicely for a future Labour prime minister who wants to channel the spirit of Harold Wilson."

I'm posting from Nottingham, acutely aware that the S may help keep our local economy on life support.🤞My point was that an incoming secretary of state has to act on the parts of their brief flashing red.
FWIW I still think it's nuts that Labour abandoned the rhetoric of levelling up.

It was a lucky escape. Because Nandytown no longer has an independent picturehouse, a theatre, or a municipal art gallery. Nandytown has less going for it culturally than Mansfield.

If faced with picking a priority from the C, the M or the S right now, surely no one could find a winning argument for picking the S?

I hang my head in shame now, because in early 2020 I was one of those Labour Party members ready to sell up and relocate to Nandytown.

Speaking from within the sector - and as someone who knows arts professionals in Bristol itself - Debbonaire was widely regarded as knowledgeable, committed and above all actually experienced in precisely the kinds of institutions currently going to the wall.

Further arts sector closures being the price we pay for Carla Denyer MP may also be a thing.

Lisa Nandy being a less effective culture secretary than Nadine Dorries, at a time when it's easier to do culture, is a thing, I suppose.

Interesting that you didn't include 'The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' (1886). The idea of a monstrous alter ego - a dark half, if you like - is also one horror writers continue to return to.

"I don’t think Steve Harley ever recaptured the brilliance of that original line-up, but I also think that this is quite possibly the most perfect English pop single ever released."
The charts of February 1975 make @alwynturner.bsky.social smile:

"Dan Carden, a former member of the Socialist Campaign Group, has established a parliamentary caucus along with three other Labour MPs" - that's not great evidence for Blue Labour's 'resurgence' being much more than a media phenomenon, is it?

On the idea of left-wing game shows, I look forward to Novara launching 'The Kropotkin Factor' and 'Sell-out of the Century'.

And their vision of a socialist media is always a media that mainly covers politics. Unlike the established media people actually consume.
As I've said before, I'll start taking advocates of an alternative Left media seriously the day they launch a sports channel, a craft magazine or a game show.
