Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) on Tuesday pressed US Trade Representative on why the Trump administration imposed tariffs on Australia despite having a trade surplus with Australia, an FTA and an important national security partnership: vt.tiktok.com/ZSrf3khBB/

During these challenging times, WTO members are still working hard to support WTO agreements that produce benefits for people and the planet. In this regard, happy to accept Moldova’s deposit today of the Instrument for Ratification of the Fisheries Subsidies Agreement.

Elon has now called Navarro the r-slur four times today in case you wanna know how things are going

Discussing present day global trade challenges with H.E Zdenko Lucić, State Secretary for Foreign Trade and Development of Croatia, Ambassador Gordan Markotić and their team. Welcome Croatia’s strong support of the rules based Multilateral Trading System!

With Trump destroying world trade Australia should resume stalled negotiations with the EU. The sticking point has been product names linked to geographical regions. We should concede the point, and opt instead for Indigenous names for items/places. A genuine win-win.

For companies planning how to deal with Trump’s tariffs – a national certificate of non-preferential origin obtained in your country IS NOT going to be relevant for exports to the US.

Bessent and Navarro both giving interviews right now with diametrically opposed vibes. I’m gonna lose it

New statement from CEA Chair Stephen Miran, whose work people used to drum up the "Mar-A-Lago Accord" idea. This is deeply unhinged stuff. Of the ideas presented, one (1) is helpful to rebalance the global economy (more defense spending by other countries). www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-st...

I'll give him this, he kept his word.

The best things about doing a pod with my pal @mollyjongfast.bsky.social is that we have time to really dig into the issues. And this time, we explore what you need to know about tariffs. You can watch (or just listen) to our convo, here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=fj2T...

To secure exports to Europe, China reconfigures its rail links – The Economist: ‘In December work officially began on a multi-billion-dollar railway through Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan that will link China more closely with Europe, bypassing Russia’

China's retaliation to the first 20% of tariffs Trump imposed was relatively minor in comparison, only hitting ~$30B in US exports at rates of 10-15%. This hits all ~$140B at 34%—that's bad news for US farmers, aircraft manufacturers, and chipmakers.

First, obviously: "Ahhhhhh!!!!" Second, what's interesting to me about this is that they haven't responded tactically with targeted tariffs on carefully selected goods that hurt Trump politically but spare Chinese consumers and businesses pain. They went flamethrower and just mirrored the 34%.

I feel bad for the people of Vietnam, who since 2017 worked hard to develop legitimate, alternative supply chains for the US, trained their low-income workers how to sew, and shored up their infrastructure and ports. The tariffs are a gut punch. www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...

The penguins react to tariffs

Trump’s tariffs have upended a roughly 70-year-old formal alliance between Australia and the U.S. as well as an even longer friendship, FP’s Amelia Lester writes.

Map shows countries hit by Trump's reciprocal tariffs and how hard.

Oh, this is gonna make the rounds. 🤡 #PenguinTariff 🐧

Bananas.

Very odd for the US to single out Australian islands (Norfolk, Heard and McDonald) in this way for specific tariffs.

If you are going to report how "reciprocal" these tariffs are or how they quantify trade barriers and economic injustices... ... please keep in mind they're not, becuase that would have required work. Instead just did: COUNTRY'S US SURPLUS --------------------------- = Rate% ITS EXPORTS TO US

😳😳

Trump's Executive Order. New tariffs go into effect starting April 5, 2025. www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

Cannot make this up… has Tasmania got a different set of tariffs as well?!?!

Norfolk Island is Australia.. why are they getting a 29 per cent tariff? Did they include Kangaroo Island as well??

Some important details on the tariff order Trump just signed (1/n) (read this story for all the details: insidetrade.com/daily-news/t...)

One point to remember amid all the numbers talk: Trump has just thrown the core principles of the post-WWII global trade system out the window. The most-favoured nation and national treatment principles have, in effect, been abandoned by the US.

One big point amid all the headlines: I was texting with press secretary Karoline Leavitt during the event and she confirms that the 34 percent tariff on China is ON TOP of the previous 20 percent. So that means the rate on China will be *54* percent when these tariffs take effect.
