A pregnant woman who was unlawfully handcuffed to an officer for 48 hours during labour says “I feel I was treated as less than an animal.” She's calling for an independent investigation into why this was allowed to happen – and she needs all our support. Get involved: welevelup.org/inquiry/

‘Joanna’ said she was handcuffed to a prison officer for more than 30 hours while she was in labour and was told by the officers: “Sorry, rules are rules…” ❤️‍🩹 yet the ‘rules’ say that restraints should not be used on women in labour! @rcm.org.uk @birthcompanions.bsky.social @cleanbrk.bsky.social

The evidence keeps piling up: Pregnant women in prison face higher risks of gestational diabetes which can lead to preeclampsia & poor birth outcomes. We are appalled by the report on @channel4news.bsky.social tonight of a woman being restrained during labour while held in prison custody. Prison will never be a safe or appropriate place for pregnant women and mothers of babies. Our full statement here: www.birthcompanions.org.uk/articles/cal...

Handcuffing pregnant women is inhumane & dangerous. 42% of women in prison r on remand, unconvicted - most 4 non-violent offenses. Community support, not prison is needed! #scenesfromlostmothers @cathynewman.bsky.social @janeystarling.bsky.social @birthcompanions.bsky.social @cleanbrk.bsky.social

Taking a baby from its mother is one of the most draconian actions imaginable, and racism must never be ignored. We send love & strength to all affected by this traumatic case, which brings sharp focus to the harm the prison system causes mothers & children www.birthcompanions.org.uk/articles/moj...

Our statement regarding a paper published in the British Journal of Psychiatry rightfullives.org.uk/blog/stateme...

Staff controlled surveillance doesn’t keep patients safe. In fact it opens them up to incidences like these. The article doesn’t make clear how they filmed the footage but it highlights how such footage, for example from a body worn camera or Oxevision, can be misused
