Yesterday, Sabina, a coworker, sent me a photo of a @davidzinn.bsky.social sidewalk drawing near our store. Like apple blossoms, fireworks, or fall colors, Zinn’s illustrations are temporary; discovering them evokes magic. Thank you, David Zinn, for magic-ifying our downtown over the years.

This customer typed a love poem to his wife for Valentine’s Day. Over the years we’ve had thousands and thousands of notes left on our typewriter; the most common theme is love—love gained, love lost, love wanted, love missed, love.

Storytelling is how we learn and grow. Our ancestors told stories to understand values, dangers, and themselves. This is why I am so disturbed by AI writing books. How will we learn, grow, and empathize with each other if the words we read originate from data centers instead of souls?

We will only sell books by humans, for humans.

I love snow fall. Big January snow that quiets cityscapes, slows minds, engulfs hearts. I post “snow falling on bookstore” pics because, like apple blossoms or autumn leaves, snow is temporary beauty. It is beautiful bc it won’t last and bc it won’t last, it is beautiful. Like a bookstore. Like us.

Thinking of our friends in LA. This photo was texted to me by my good friend Jess. I used to live off Sunset Boulevard, and it's heartbreaking to see neighborhoods I loved now burn.
