It will get lost in the torrent, but hard to overstate how scandalous this is. The national security advisor was communicating via a jerry-rigged version of an encrypted app that *functionally removed the encryption*, meaning an Israeli company could read all his texts. Throw in the towel, folks.

Ope

Scoop: NIST's Computer Security Division — responsible for research & standards on cyber, privacy, cryptography, AI, etc. — has lost more than a dozen people, including its chief, to early retirements. www.cybersecuritydive.com/news/nist-cy... The departures could imperil key work.

They can't tell you because they likely don't know. And even if they did outside of science journalism and service journalism, journalism *as practiced* doesn't think it's job is to educate.

“The poll found that on a weekly basis more than 90% of people use … information that is based on federal science. But only 10% of respondents are concerned that cuts to federal support for science might impact their access to such information.”

It is ridiculous to take Trump at his word that his is doing to .edu is to fight antisemitism. It is laughable to accept the premise that an admin w/ a Nazi salute at the inauguration is focused on protecting Israel. It is as hateful as it is counter-productive to amplify their obvious lies.

Lawless. ‘How come I can’t breathe?': Musk’s data company runs turbines, enough to power 280,000 homes, run without emission controls in an area that leads Tennessee in asthma hospitalizations. www.politico.com/news/2025/05...

"If you look at a long period of time, a lot of our increase in living standards seems to be coming from public investment in scientific research." The devastating cuts to science funding aren't just academic, they threaten our livelihoods and wellbeing. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/30/b...

NYT Page One: “.. a blitz of moneymaking ventures capitalizing on their father’s name and power, each seemingly trying to outdo the other.” @nytimes.com

Using a LLM to write a term paper is useful in a similar way t using a forklift for weightlifting at the gym. Yes, it may be efficient in completing the task, but the value is in the hard work

It's Teacher Appreciation Week. Here's how to appreciate teachers: pay them better.

"[T]he ability of this country to deal with cyber threats is being absolutely gutted for political reasons." @maggiemiller.bsky.social's dispatch from last week's #RSAC conference, as the cyber community reels from Trump's attacks: www.politico.com/news/2025/05...

These are More Perfect Union's new billboards by going up in Philadelphia that target DOGE cuts to Valley Forge National Park. "Now with reduced staff - made possible by D.O.G.E."

Unfortunately the DOGE-bags assigned to DOL aren't on this list from OPM (!?) but now we have even more evidence that they are milking this arrangement for all it's worth. Most of them appear to be making the maximum allowed as feds, under whatever category they were designated.

Our hearts go out to the incredible folks at NIOSH. On Friday night, most remaining staff were laid off—gutting programs that protect workers, like PPE approvals and firefighter health research. RFKJ’s HHS tried to downplay it on X, brushing it off as just a “required notice.” Total BS.

Fox News' Jesse Watters met with "the DOGE boys" for their "nightly meeting," including... Big Balls. The meeting was led by Elon Musk, who the DOJ has insisted in court does not lead DOGE. I did not see Amy Gleason at the meeting. cc: @annabower.bsky.social

The fact that Musk is seeking new government spending on his companies while dismantling spending on core public services seems like a bit of a conflict.

UPDATE: Judge Leon has GRANTED a "narrow" restraining order barring DOGE from further dismantling the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) or pausing/terminating grants. The order does not require IMLS to restore the status of its staff for now.

"Talking for an hour with a purveyor of racist pseudoscience who openly tells you he blames the decline of society on women...is neither serious nor constructive." Interesting @chancephillips.bsky.social response to Douthat's interview of Keeperman www.liberalcurrents.com/the-new-york...

There’s no way to achieve the level of cuts Trump is proposing without deeply harming the American people. www.washingtonpost.com/business/202...

I just got the official email from the NSF about the drastic cuts and I think the correct translation is "if you are a young researcher who still wants to do science strongly consider leaving the United States if you can." which, really, is not an ideal message to be sending.

Just deranged. This was a *solved* problem.

"'How ‘DOGE orthogonal’ is it? Like, does it still require Kremlin oversight?' another person said in a comment that received five reactions with a fire emoji."

Rep. Goldman: Raise your hand if you do NOT think children with cancer who are American citizens should be deported Republicans: *all refuse to raise their hands*

Behavior to emulate

So cutting funding to Howard is how they plan to fulfill this executive order from last week.

Let's talk about mine safety real quick. There have been 12 mine fatalities so far in 2025. In the same period in 2024, there were 5. So while the administration is making cuts at MSHA and delaying the implementation of the much-needed silica rule, the number of miners dying has more than doubled.

“These lawyers appear to be obeying Stephen Miller and not the Supreme Court,” says Chris Newman, an attorney for the Abrego Garcia family. “Miller himself should be deposed under oath in federal court to determine his role in this ongoing affront to due process.”

we are so beyond "distancing himself from" even mattering. It's disqualifying. Not even close. Not reparable.

We told you Marco Rubio was Trump's most dangerous enabler. Now that Rubio has been given the job of interim National Security Adviser, reupping this piece, which systematically details how Rubio has had a hidden hand in many of Trump's most lawless enterprises: newrepublic.com/article/1930...

I talked to Nature about the latest development at NSF, which is a five-alarm fire for American science. The scale of immediate impact is massive. We narrowly escaped this affecting @viralemergence.org for now, but will have to shut down in a few months if this stays. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Nazi Germany surrendered in May 1945. For Americans, the Second World War would rage for three more months, until VJ Day in August. But for Russians and those influenced by them, "Victory Day" falls in May. Trump follows the Russian practice, not the American.

This is impoundment, it is illegal, and that should be in the headline www.npr.org/2025/05/02/n...

We need to say more explicitly and clearly: this is happening *because of* Trump and Musk's behavior. The threat is coming from inside the house. www.reuters.com/investigatio...

Have we talked enough about how the New York Times broadcast the views of a Holocaust denier with zero pushback from its columnist? Is the paper going to investigate antisemitism in its own building? www.nytimes.com/2025/05/01/o...

ALERT: I had not seen this article until this morning. It is a pretty big deal. Mike Waltz isn’t actually using Signal. He’s using a copy or third party version of Signal created by a company called TeleMessage the point of which is to allow archiving of messages. The app claims to preserve …

Last week, the govt dismissed 400 researchers working on the US National Climate Assessment. I was one of them. Today, @agu.org & @ametsoc.org announced they are joining forces to sustain the momentum. It's not a replacement, it's a reminder that science is unstoppable. news.agu.org/press-releas...
