They can't tell you because they likely don't know. And even if they did outside of science journalism and service journalism, journalism *as practiced* doesn't think it's job is to educate.

I really wish the US news media would explain the difference between a trade deficit and a subsidy, and call this out as lying, or a minimum, an extremely flawed misunderstanding of economics.

Journalism operates under a trust me bro belief system.
I'm not talking about capacity I'm talking about practice. But if it makes you feel better to functionally call people stupid good on you.
And you can add it the opposing view. "economists point out that..."
But you could still be sued if you published a quote about someone that wasn't true, even if you didn't say you agreed
