Today’s walk #xwwlw

Tha mi a 'smaoineachadh air stoc cearc a dhèanamh airson a' chiad uair, ach an fhiach e an ùine is an cosgais, idir? Cha do rinn mi e a-raoimh. #teagamh

“If you had to guess the leading cause of death for children and young people around the world, what would you say? Malaria perhaps? Pneumonia? Suicide? They’re all high up there, but no, it’s road accidents.”

Seachdain sona dhuibh… Am bi mi a’ sgriobhadh ach Gàidhlig dona an seachdain seo? 🤔 #cleachdi

Reading this very interesting book, edited by Jacob King, and now wondering whether the Braids in Edinburgh is Gaelic-derived. I think it fits both the upland meaning, and the throaty alternative

Drawings of courier #chess pieces by Gustavus Selenus, from the book Das Schach-oder Königs-Spiel (1616). I didn’t know the elephant was still appearing (as the rook) as late as the 17thC. In courier chess there are 12 main pieces - two couriers, a sage and a fool in addition. #chesspunks #chessclub

Surely this new video won't make me seem like a crank. www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEJp...

An event I always used to enjoy, and this year I finally went again to the matinee, with the nipper with me this time. Takes you out of yourself. Inspired by the story of Hugh Herr and others.

There’s a corrigendum online that this dates from 1985, not 1987, and then reprinted in 2016. Interesting to see the mindset, the speech patterns, the ideation of Soviet collaboration & use of brute force, all already present 40 years ago. www.slate.com/articles/new...

I hope the Wellington Monument turns out to be far too small a space for this. Presumably the choice of meeting point - a statue of a man who undertook diplomatic missions in Russia, & was named “the man who would save Europe” by Tsar Alexander I - is a coincidence? I don’t fully get the context.

Any #chess players or #chesspunks on here? I’m looking for an example of a beautiful rook fork, if anyone has one in a game and they’d be happy to share it? I’m on chess dot com.

It’s a bit strange to think we are a city with more dogs than children, but I’m sure that must be the case: data.defra.gov.uk/Agriculture/...

omc, is this where it sprang from?! 🙀 m.youtube.com/watch?v=mDFB...

I had a ♟️game, which I stashed on here, which demonstrated really beautifully the perils of taking your Queen out too soon… and then scrubbed that account. Now scrolling through dozens of games on my account 😫

NEED this option on chess.com 🥱

This is not an intellectual point, bur I wanted to state that I am frightened by the situation in the US and I am becoming even more anxious by the extent to which most people I know IRL (ie: not politics addicts) are entirely unmoved

I’ve been thinking this, & wondering if there’s some kind of tacit agreement not to stoke fear & alarm either on social media or IRl - & there’s a huge argument for that! - & I’m just too dumb to grasp this basic etiquette. Maybe it’s the Denial stage in the 5 stages of grief. The silence is eerie.

Hermann Hesse, remember

This is not a heartbeat, but the elevation profile of my dullest walk to date. Talking the other day with a pal, we were musing as to how the proposed Pilrig Park parkrun would work in practice, whether it would be an adult parkrun, or a junior one.

Asked my son what a skibidi toilet was, and he said it was a person with their head sticking out of a toilet. He doesn’t know what it is either, in short. Or else he’s throwing me a red herring to gatekeep Gen A sigma lingo from Gen X intruders. Psych!

List of events happening in Scotland around the 3rd anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. List curated by @ukrainesol.bsky.social Scotland branch.

'Ukraine has bought Europe time by standing as its first line of defence. Enough of that time has already been squandered through refusal to recognise the danger. History may never forgive the current generation of European leaders if their procrastination continues' www.ft.com/content/f268...
